Cookin Up Cross Country

BY: Toni Burr

Cross Country season is still here and it is only getting better! One of the spotlight runners is Owen Hennessey, he is a fast, steady paced runner. I asked Owen how his meets are going and he replied with, "The meets are fun, we have to get up really early so we're always tired but it's always worth it because I always seem to be getting better."

Owen has many awards and recognition, he has five varsity letters, he has two for cross country, one for swimming, and two for track. He also has four academic plaques: one for choir, geometry, Spanish, and science. Owen's high school highlight is that he is a section leader in marching band and also in jazz band.

Owen has many high school goals, one big one is that he wants to graduate with honors and with a grade point average higher than 4.0. He also wants to become a president in all of the clubs he is currently in. He wants to be a drum major in band and a dance captain or a section leader in show choir. He also wants to go to college in his near future.

Owen also has a life outside of school and his activities. His favorite Disney movie is The Incredibles, and his favorite Disney princess movie is Tangled. He also likes plays, his favorite is the new Beauty and the Beast.  Owen also really likes to read, his favorite book is The Mysterious Benedict Society, and his favorite movie series is Star Wars.

Madison Cross Country is a big sport here at the high school, all of the kids work very hard everyday and they are getting so much better at what they do.

Nerve Racking Rivalry

BY: Emily Johnston

The Madison High School Cheerleaders are starting to get hype for the Madison, the Perry game this Friday. Perry is our biggest rival and this is hands down the biggest game of the season. The boys are fighting to get the brown jug back that was taken from us the past two years. We have a pep-assembly the morning of the game with the entire school, featuring the Madison cheerleaders. The varsity cheerleaders have been choreographing and practicing a dance to perform at the pep-rally. The JV cheerleaders have been practicing a cheer to perform. The girls are very excited.

Kamryn Kincaid, a senior varsity cheerleader, said, “This week is very nerve racking for everyone! We have been practicing our dance this whole week to perfect it for our biggest assembly of the year. It’s been a great start to the season. 212.” Madison High School has a different vibe to it this week, while everyone is ecstatic for this rival game.

The cheerleaders are hopeful and believe that the streaks will come home with the brown jug Friday night. Good luck boys!!!

Newest Addition

BY: Alyssa Caruthers

Hard work and dedication pays off. Just ask Autumn Warren, who was awarded the third captains spot on the JV girls soccer team. Autumn has been working hard on the soccer field at the young age of four years old.

Autumn is a hardworking, friendly and caring person both on and off the soccer field.  Autumn's favorite color is purple. Her favorite class is Spanish with Mrs.Chandler and her favorite sports team is the Cavs. Everything Everything, Ride Along, and Napoleon Dynamite are Autumn’s favorite movies. She like to spend her free time watching The Office and Prison break of spending time with friends.

Autumn could not be any more excited to be captain, she loves the sport and her team, and is so happy to get to be one of their leaders. When asked about her expectations for the rest of the season Autumn said,  “My expectations for the rest of the season would be for us to keep our winning streak going, which I know we can do if we keep playing how we know how to play!” Autumn’s favorite part about playing soccer is the feeling when you give your all and you are completely exhausted and come out of the game with a win, wholeheartedly knowing you did your absolute best.

Autumn says her favorite part of high school so far is all of the school spirit, going to the football games, and soccer of course. Aside from soccer, Autumn also keeps straight A’s. Her goals for high school are to graduate with a 4.0 GPA and to receive her varsity letter. After high school Autumn wants to go to college and graduate with a degree in either cosmetology or cinematography.

Not only is Autumn a great soccer player, she is also an amazing track athlete. Autumn runs the 100 meter hurdles, and had a very successful track season last year. Autumn says, “I have really been working hard to perfect my technique and my sprinting this off season, with a lot of help from Coach Anchrom, and I know the competition will be harder and I hope I can do well this coming season.” Autumn is a very talented athlete in both soccer and track and a great teammate and friend to everyone, and the soccer team could not be any luckier to have her as their leader.

Hitting the Green

Our Madison boys golf team played Brush team at Manakiki  Golf Course, Tuesday, September 5th. As I interviewed two players, Logan S., and Lucas W., they were asked some questions that to them seemed as easy questions but received complex answers. Why is this game important you might ask? According to Logan S., “They were an easy win, to me it was just another win.” Seems to me that the confidence has sky rocketed. Logan also said, “That was my expectation for this game as well.” Lucas W. chimes in with his comment of “ Honestly this team is so easy to beat, taking candy from a baby is what it’s like.” Talking to Coach Hupertz on what lead to this win he comments,  “Brush is a struggling team, my team played on a tough course as well. Two of my players shot a 43 which helps tremendously.” We also asked how does this affect the team in moving forward with the season. Hupertz smiled, laughed and said, “ Any win for the team is wonderful, but these wins do come with a lot of work as well. We have a lot of progress to make and a long way to come but in the end I am sure we will make it big this year.” Logan chimes in and says, “Honestly it does give us a confidence booster.” Lucas nodded his head and agreed. Coach was asked who he believes were the top three performers on the team, “This was honestly a tough question, I would have to say Logan S., Dan A. and Lucas W.” Their next game is September 12th, Vs Willoughby South at 3:10. Come out and support our Boys Golf!

Digging Those Steaks?

The JV volleyball team hasn’t had the best of luck during the season so far. They are a good, hard  working team that pushes themselves, but the score doesn’t always show that. So far they have  beat Warrensville heights, they accomplished this on Tuesday. Today they played a spectacular game! They won in two games, the score of the final game was 25 to 14 with a  Madison victory. They played this game to win, there was nothing stopping them today. They were very scrappy and consistent.

I kept my eyes on three girls today. These girls were Halle Blackford, Angela West, and Taylor Menough. Halle is a setter, and a very good one. She played a great game today! I mainly focused on Halle today because without a setter, the play can’t continue, the setter always has the second ball. It is important that people stay out of  the setters way. Without Halle the hitters would have a very hard time doing their job. Halle had about 45 sets today, she didn’t have many errors. Angel also had a very good game. She was very scrappy and hustled after every  ball that came her way. Angel is the libero, which means she is the best passer on the team. She has to have a good pass in order for the setter to have an easier job. Angela had  eleven digs and six passes to the setter, she had two errors. Taylor also played a great game. Taylor is a middle hitter, she finishes out the play. As the middle hitter she hits the ball when the set is put right over the net. The middle hitter is most likely a tall girl. Taylor got about 20 or so sets. Taylor also is a blocker, she is a very good one. She also gets the occasional pass.

Talking to some of the fans and others, everyone thought it was a fun game to watch. Over all the JV volleyball team had a very good game today. They played again on Saturday against Buckeye Trail, and Valley Forge, it is a home game. I know that these girls are going to keep pushing themselves as hard as they can. IMG_0646.JPG

Beat Perry

BY: Isabel Gnagy

This week we take on our life long rivals the Perry Pirates. The brown jug has been in Perry’s possession for two years. So far this season perry has been undefeated with a 2-0 record. Madison has a 1-1 record so far with last Friday’s loss against Lakeside but that has all been said and done.
This Friday, as put in Coach Willis’s words, “It’s going to be a great game. It’s always a great game. Both teams are looking forward to it.” Principal Fisher says that “Despite being the big underdogs as we have been for the last two years, in this game, I believe our guys will raise to the occasion and be there right till the end.”

As said in the last article covering our first home game, the players are putting in a lot of
effort and focus into this game. It’s our rivalry game and everyone is wanting to come out on top with a win. Last year’s game ended with a heartbreaking loss of 14-21.

Even in the classroom the football players feel they will 100 percent win. When a comment was made jokingly about losing this Friday, tight end Cameron Luster shot down the statement immediately with a strong 212 spirit.

Most of the student body feels the Blue Streaks football team can go out to Perry this Friday and put in their all into the game from 7 p.m. to the very end. Junior Jordan P. doesn’t quite know what expect out of the game. She’s hoping for a win but predicts a tie. There’s only three ways the game could go but we won’t know until the Perry verse Madison game starts. This Friday night lights game should be one to remember for a while.

The Brown Jug's Story

BY: Jack Tagliamonte

You all know the story of the Brown Jug, but I don't, so I'm gonna tell you my idea of why this gross looking jug that we fight over every year is rightfully ours.

Back in the like...  1600 kind of idea, we follow a man named King Richard III, he ruled over lands he called Madison. Every year they would defend themselves from pirates that would  invade them from what is now called Canada, it was formerly called "Free Healthcare and Beavers." The pirates would sail across the lake and try to take an artifact given by the Greek God Zeus himself, a blue jug. It's power was immense. It's royal blue color and small lightning bolts gave King Richard III the idea to name his soldiers "Blue Streaks".They were faster and stronger than 10 men combined, and no one could beat them. Years passed and King Richard III held the jug with pride, but the pirates were in the bay, waiting for the right time to steal the jug away from the kingdom.

That fateful night, pirates snuck into Madison's lands, stole the jug and sailed back to "Free Healthcare and Beavers," but Zeus felt something was wrong with the force- or something, I don't know- and attacked the dreaded pirates, smiting ships down one by one, the god was furious, throwing lightning from the sky. The pirates landed safely in their own land and tainted the jug, turning its vibrant blue to a dirty brown, rumor has it that it because they're all really gross and dirty over there but hey you didn't hear it from me, anyway the jug lost its power and didn't grant its legendary power any longer.

The pirates migrated down south, and, as a result of injury, they sat up camp not far from the kingdom and taunted King Richard III for ages. The jug was fought over for decades on end until Zeus told the holder of the jug that the power can be reborn by eating a bunch of stale minty lifesavers, no one believed him because no one likes minty lifesavers, especially if they're stale.

So who knows, we all could've been winning the brown jug but we're all afraid of stale lifesavers.
