A Week of Volleyball for MHS

This week was a long week for the varsity volleyball with a total of four games, losing to Geneva and Kenston, and having success against Edgewood and Lakeside. They had their first game against at home versus Geneva, it was a little shaky because it was their first game as a team, so everyone was still learning their positions and their teammates.

After taking a loss the team practiced and became stronger, winning their second game against Edgewood everyone found their positions and are starting to come together as a team and give everything into the games. The third game was against Kenston which was a very good games against a hard team, they all played together as a team giving it their all.

The last game they had this week was against Lakeside, winning in four games, this game was very energetic, they cheered so loud that some of their voices went away from screaming so loud. Their communication was good and they improved so much from the first to their last game this week.

Captains Dawn Brassow and Brannigan Cramb said they still have a lot to work on like tweaking it up a little bit to become the best they can be, but they have high potential this volleyball season. They have a good team this season and they all mesh together like a family they are picking up the energy and having fun times together as a team.

It's Game Time!

Well they finally set a date for the Powderpuff game.  Yes it is officially a go. May 1st is the day to be ready; however, we do have a makeup day, May 2nd, in case there is snow on the field.  If there is still snow on the field then we won’t be playing this year. We told Fish we would play in the snow, but he didn’t want to handle cold. Instead he is doing it four days before prom. Smart, right? Let's just hope no one breaks their tiaras.

The captains for this event for the seniors are Alyssa Rose, Rachel Collins, Shyenne Ledford, and Maranda English. The juniors are Jordan Pasalaqua, and Alyssa Caruthers. The game will be coached by senior football players for the seniors and junior football players for the junior girls participating in this event. There will also be guy cheerleaders to cheer on both teams, let's hope the game isn’t fixed this year, but it will be. I predict that the juniors will be victorious. This game is a big deal; however, the only the winners get in the end is bragging rights.  

Even though it is flag football there will still be some sweet tackles. The people in the stands get pretty wild, it something that the whole school will attend and even the middle school made an appearance last year. It should be a good game so don’t forget your gloves and winter coats because it will probably still be snowing. Be there, cheer them on, and watch the girls put in a 212 effort.

Callie Galovic

Callie is a 4 year for cross country, and track. She plans to attend Ohio State University to study political science and environmental studies. She is also a member of NHS.

Hannah Howell

Hannah likes to hangout with friends, and plans to attend Cleveland State for nursing.

Shyenne Ledford

Shyenne is a 4 year varsity player for Basketball, Volleyball, and Track. She also enjoys doing crossfit and plans to attend Mount Union University for criminal justice. She is also a member of NHS.

Izabelle Vliek

Izabelle is a member of yearbook staff, she helped with the senior prank, and also helped sell bracelets for Mr. Grier. She also dressed up as Pedro Sanchez one time at school.

Olivia Wortman

Olivia is a 3 year varsity cheerleader and also the cheer captain. She plans to attend Palm Beach Atlantic University to study marine biology.

Lane Calvert

Lane is a 2 year varsity for baseball. He enjoys spending free time helping with the younger kids at baseball and hanging out with friends. He plans to attend Lakeland Community College to study sociology.  

Richard Camp

Richie is a member of the band, 2 year varsity player for the soccer and tennis team. He plans to attend Ohio State University to study international business. He is also the president of NHS.

Joey Hersh

Joey is a 3 year varsity wrestler, he likes to hangout with friends and his girlfriend Brooke Vollman.

Cameron Luster

Cameron is a 2 year varsity for football, he likes to spend his free time lifting. He plans to attend Lakeland Community College.

Noah Sample

Noah is 2 year varsity for Football, has been in key club for 3 years. A member of NHS. He plans to attend Cleveland institute of art.

Making Future Records

The 2018 Outdoor Track season is going to be something no one expects, from jumpers, to distance to sprints, to throws; the MHS track team will not disappoint you. They are a family that continues to push each other to reach their best potential. The girls and boys teams are both expected to have a very successful season. On Wednesday, April 11th at 4 PM you can come down to the Madison High School track to see all the lovely smiling faces of the track family as they compete against the Riverside Beavers. Some students that might catch your eye are Nick Amos, Nolan Landis, Sydney Guyer, and Hannah Gabor.

Nick is coming into the outdoor season right off of a strong 2018 indoor season with some personal records of a 4:31 1600, 10:07 3200 and 2:05 800. He says “I think we have a vary solid underclassmen team. We have a strong backbone for upcoming years.” Nick wants to get under a 4:30 in the 1600 as well as under 10 minutes in the 3200.

Hannah has a personal record for the 100 meter hurdles of a 17.6. She wants to work towards getting her steps down to a 3 step between the hurdles and hopefully make it past districts. She would also like to prove that after experiencing an injury the previous year, she is back and better than before.

Nolan Landis is something different altogether. He came back to Madison this year after going away to school in PA. He has an outstanding personal record of 58’10” for shot and a 191’4” for discus. He would like to break 200 feet in discus, and 60 feet in shot, both huge milestones in throwing.

Sydney Guyer is a powerhouse sophomore who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty with throwing. She has a personal record for shot of 30’5” and would like to continue to hit new PRs through out the season.

The 2018 outdoor season has a lot of potential and a lot of outstanding athletes. Don't forget to come and watch your favorite group of people tear up the track on Wednesday, April 11th at 4 PM. The more people that come and cheer, the faster athletes run, the farther they throw. Make some noise and come support.

An Angel in Madison

Art. To most, a required course at most high schools but here at Madison High School it is another story. Mr. Grier, one of the most beloved and outstanding teachers at MHS passed away February 15, 2018. The day, only a month ago, started out uncertain with the news of his passing as it was a controversial rumor but by the end of first block it was officially confirmed. He was gone too soon from our school and too fast for our hearts.

Heartbreak rang throughout the school. Flowers and works of art were laid in front of the Streak Shack as a memorial to him. And on all social media platforms there were various accounts of memories with Mr. Grier. Many recall his musical taste, always playing Artic money or other 80s/90s rock throughout his whole class period. While at first in the beginning we all found his taste strange, we learned to love not only the music but the man himself. 

His personality was always something that stood out as well. His sarcastic comments that always incited laughter through any student will never be forgotten but instead always remembered and cherished. Along with his jokes came his ever so present want to help any student in any way he could. His endearing and calming ways helped numerous troubled students who had either came to him or he had gone to check on when he felt they were troubled. He cared so much for all students of Madison and many of us cared just as much back. Possibly even more.

Mr. Grier taught us all two major things in that very art class: Expression and love. He taught many that art is more than just lines and colors. Art is a way to express yourself and your feelings in a creative peaceful way for others to see and relate to. His teachings have inspired many to become an art teacher as well or become an active member in the art community. He had taught us so much and it hopefully will never be forgotten.  

He taught us to always love ourselves and others around us. Treat them with care and never isolate someone out because they were different. He continuously went out of his way to make sure no one was left out. For several classes he brought in snacks such as donuts and if someone ever had an allergy he did all he could to make sure they weren’t left out. He would bring in their favorite kind of food because they couldn’t eat the donuts or the delectable snack he had that day.

Jeff Grier was an astounding person and a critical part of the Madison High School staff. Not only will his family mourn his loss but so will the teachers and students of Madison High School. We may have lost a teacher but we have most definitely gained an angel.

What's Next For The Women's Choir?

All three of your Madison High School Choir’s went to contest Nordonia High School. The best score you could get would be a 1 rating out of 5, and in order to move on to states you must score a 1. Concert Choir had scored 3, Eclectica had scored a 2 and Women’s Choir scored a 1. Since, Women’s Choir had scored the best they get to move on to states. Four years in a row they have made it to states and they have brought home a plaque in honor of going that far.  

Stacie Ratajc, this being her first year in the high school as well as being a part of Women's Choir, felt that this was a wonderful experience. “I felt that this was another way to hear us, as well as come together more as a whole choir.“

Reese Morgan had also chimed in, as this being her first year in this choir, but her second year in high school, “ It was beautiful to see how much work and effort we put together in this and to see a great outcome and to have success and make it to states.”

Others had said how they worked together to have such a beautiful harmony. This being Bailey Rieck third year in Women’s Choir, she is very proud of being able to make it to states again and hopefully bringing home another plaque. Everyone had said that the girls only have a few minor things to fix and they feel that they should be ready to bring home yet again another plaque. They travel the weekend of April 20th to Highland Medina High School. Wish these ladies good luck!

Jack's Journey Through The Junior Year: The Disastrous Delays

Please stop delaying Project Unify. It's been like 4 weeks since we were supposed to do it, then we had to push it back because we weren't ready, then it got delayed for losing one of the greats, then a snow day. What's next, are we going to get a present from North Korea? How about King Kong destroying the school? Maybe the Girl Scouts burn the place down! Just really think about it, do you think there's another reason behind this? Maybe the reason why we keep on delaying it is because they went full Space Jam and took all of the players skills and now we have to go against the MonStars. Maybe there's something even bigger than that, maybe there's something more.... sinister.

Probably not though. We've just kept on pushing it back for the extra tension for when it actually does happen. But I feel like with the good old Madison luck the world would end when we were actually going to have Project Unify in full effect. But how? I hear none of you asking, I don't know that's up to your imagination, stop bothering me about it. Overall I just want to watch Project Unify on the day we promised, I want us to push through it no matter what because it's worth it in the end. How long has it been since we've had an assembly? Probably a million years, the last one I remember was the homecoming court one when they played the games, so I think it'll be good to have everyone back in one room again.
