The Cardinal Invitationals Tournament

By : Taylor Stevens

On the 9th of December, Madison’s Wrestling team traveled to Cardinal High School in Middlefield to compete in the Cardinal Invitational Tournament. The teams that participated in this match were Madison, Harvey, Newberry, Aurora, NDCL, and many more. In this tournament there was lots of improvement shown by the boys of the team. These improvements are what helped Madison take first overall in the tournament.

A lot of players placed in their weight classes. Jeff Brichford, captain, placed 1st in the 132 weight class. Brody Arrundale, also a captain, placed 1st in the 170 weight class. Drew Bailey placed 1st in the 113 weight class. Placing 2nd place in their weight class was Logan Blough in the 182 weight class, Douglas Bailey in the 145 weight class, Shayne Magda in the 152 weight class, and Jason Davidson in the 120 weight class. Nick Meyers placed 4th in the 195 weight class.

The team is looking forward to further matches in the future and also winning these matches. Clay Smith, who is a senior, said the team needs to show more aggression or E.T.T, which means Empty The Tank. Coach Tomas said when they got on the mat, the players did what they were supposed to do but there is still lots of improvement to be made. It’s the beginning of the season which leads to great opportunities for improvement. The next match is on December 16th, 2017 at Saint Ignatius High School. Be there to support the boys!

Jack's Journey Through Junior Year

BY: Jack Tagliamonte

You guys think Amazon is secretly a wicked Viking Clan, Norsemen of old, wicked cool boat loving, ax wielding ax guys? I do, they're buying huge businesses and plots of land to build huge buildings for "Storage" but is it storage, Amazon? Or is it secret prisons, super well hidden boat garage, or maybe a gateway into some upside down world that was opened by some little girl with an Eggo waffle addiction? Really Amazon, I don't see you having anything good about you, your CEO looks like Mark Zuckerberg's bald lizard brother, he looks like Dr. Evil with Dumbo ears, he looks like an egg. Alright I'm done smacking on Mr. Clean, but he looks like the kind of guy who just bought into being evil, kind of looks like he's trying to kill Superman, okay seriously I'm done making fun of him but there's a serious look to his face like he's trying to take over the world with some crazy secret plan and I want to uncover it.

Jeff Bazos, you look like you know which one came first, the chicken or the egg. He probably knows and won't tell anyone just for the fact that we don't know, but maybe he really is just a normal guy with an incredible business that surpasses everyone else's idea. Nah that's boring, there's nothing interesting about that, there has to be some crazy Kit Kat and a kaboodle at the end of this right? YOU'RE RIGHT! SO as stated earlier, they've been buying out huge businesses and taking them for their own, sounds very... Viking don't you think? Vikings were aggressive boys with boats, Jeff has a boat and has been taking out competition left and right, showing he is aggressive. Vikings had hair, Jeff used to have hair too. Vikings raided and fought for personal gain and according to Forbes, Jeff is definitely rocking that "personal gain" thing with his 19.1 BILLION DOLLAR HOME. So really I think Jeff is descendant of Bjorn Ironside, one of the most intense vikings ever.

I'm just spooked Amazon is gonna take over the world with its insane in the membrane viking tactics and you should be too. Also the FCC is a big ol bowl of gross guy spaghetti if Net Neutrality gets chopped.

Our Greatest Tradition

BY: Kaitlyn Rohl

Madison is known for new traditions, one of our greatest traditions happened back in 2014 Haley Azbill had a idea that would impact many lives. She created Project Unify. Project Unify is a foundation of diversity, where different individuals valuing each other regardless of skin, intellect, talents, or years. This helped provide a great way for teachers to get involved with the students, parents to engage, and the student body to join together and become more of a whole while showing support for their peers, impacting them greatly.

In 2016 Jessica McPeek took over senior Haley Azbill position after Haley graduated. In 2017 Haley's younger sister Brittany organized another basketball game in which Fox 8 News  attended for the second time since the start of the school’s participation. This years 2018 project unify leaders with be Rachel Collins and Emma Burkholder. Rachel Collins have been interested in getting the position since freshman year, she’s always wanted to be apart because she says that she love working with the students involved with this event. “This experience is so special to me,” says Collins.

Since the beginning of project unify the student body has helps supports the event, purchasing t-shirts and admission tickets. In the past years the girls have set up a spaghetti dinner to as a fundraiser for this special event, each ticket has been $10 and all donations went towards the Project Unify game. Rachel and Emma came up with a new idea this year, they set up a fashion show,  girls from past years donated their dresses, and the models walked down the runway will girls bid on the dresses. They sold a total 22 dresses to the MHS girls. All bids on the dresses were put too this year's Project Unify.

This year the students will all wear yellow, for autism awareness. Rachel said they decided on yellow this year because it's a bright and very happy color. As they have not picked the day yet, they asked that some time in February for the basketball game to come out and watch our students during their time to shine.

Lights! Camera! Action!

BY: Emily Johnston

Over the weekend, your Madison High School competition cheerleaders took on "Lights! Camera! Action!" cheer and dance competition in Erie, PA.

The girls took first place and grand champions, meaning they not only won their division, but the whole competition, scoring 94.2 points out of 100. They also took home “rocking cash”,  to use towards the Cleveland nationals, and a full paid bid to attend the Lake Erie nationals. The team plans to attend both of those competitions and they are hopefully awaiting more success at them.

At the competition, the girls perform a 2 minutes and 30 second routine that consists of a short intro cheer, and short dance, and then a longer cheer and longer dance. They perform the hard routine all while keeping a smile on their faces and looking like they have lots of energy.

The team is proud of themselves and that their hard work has paid off for them. Captain Brionna Havens says, “I’m proud of the accomplishments the competition team has had, taking 1st at both of our competitions so far this season. Not only 1st place, but also grand champions with a score of 94.2. Being this is my last year and being a captain, I’m glad we have started off with the big wins we have.”

The cheerleaders still look forward to more hard practices, more competitions, and bettering themselves this season. They are not only looking to beat other teams, but to do better than their last competition and beat their own score each time.

Fancy Caroling Time!

BY: Sierra Croddock

Happy Holiday’s everyone! Your Madison Show Choir performed this past Saturday at Debonne Winery in Thomson. Two hours of fun filled singing and dancing while people were having dinner and some fine wine.

Abby Schultz, her first year in show choir, said it was a lot of fun. According to another member, they did things a bit different this year with performing. They said it was separated in groups, smaller sections as well. Brooke Howley spoke up very clearly and said, “It was a very personal experience and more relaxed because we are not on stage and we can see the fans reaction and what not more than if you were on the stage in front of a bunch of people.”

Caroling seems to have a more emotional experience because you are talking about whatever Holiday you celebrate. Thea Sapic made a comment on how it was their first year singing at a winery and she is a senior. The setting was a bit different because while you are performing you see everyone just watching you and how close you are to them, it is very easy to see them and have any feedback right then and there while when you have a bigger crowd you don’t have as much pressure. A huge Thank you to Debonne Winery as well for letting the Madison Show Choir perform. Their next performance is at Cornerstone from 5:30 to 6:00. The Show Choir highly appreciate the support!

Underwater Records

By: Joshua Smith

Joey Smith a senior that is a  part of the swim team and also one of the best swimmers on the team. Many things earned him this spotlight. One is that he broke one individual and three relays and he is the captain of the boys swim team.

Joey was chosen for a spotlight specifically because he has broken many records and stood out the most on the team as an individual. The records Joey broke was 100 breaststroke record in 105.7 minutes and 2 district qualifier. Joey likes to compete, and he likes to cheer on his team mates.

Joeys goals to accomplish in high school is to finish the top 15 percent in his class. One of his best moments of high school he shared with me was on the homecoming court. Joeys plan for the future is play baseball in college and also major in some kind of business.

Joey's favorite baseball team is the Cleveland Indians and his favorite movie is Sandlot, a baseball movie. His favorite food is pasta and meatballs. That was some of the good things about Joey smith about what he likes to do and what loves. Joey is also a great baseball player.

Joeys first swim meet is on the 3rd in December its at the spire and they are facing Pymatuning valley and hopefully the blue streaks win their first swim meet. The picture above below is Joey and his friends, Richie and David.

Hoping to Break More Records

By:Kennedy Rochford

I interviewed with Zoey Fedele a sophomore at Madison High School, also on the girls swim team at this school. This year she is very confident in for this swim season, she is confident in her team this year, she feels they will have a really good year with no drama and to have many good times and create more memories with the her team. Not only is she excited to see how she does she is also excited to watch and cheer on her team. Zoey feels her rely is really good and she believes they have potential to break the records.
Zoey has goals for herself. In school she wants to maintain her GPA and in swim to get new records for the 100 fly, she also wants to qualify for states and hopefully win first or second in districts this year. Last year she set personal records: the 200 free which was 1:58.5,  the 200 individual medley which is 2 minutes and 21 seconds, and the 500 free which she set 5:48. Not only did she set personal goals, she also set a school record for the 100 fly which is 1:00.18 minute.

A quote that keeps her motivated is a saying her old coach told her, “If it ever gets easy in practice find a way to make it hard”. Last year, Zoey also went to sectional championship, and at the WRC which was her most important meet, at that meet she set the record for her 100 fly. Now her and her team are preparing for this season to hopefully beat some more records.

The Best of JV Basketball!

By: Kelsey Burkholder

I have chose to do this article on Ryan Bowers. I decided to talk to Ryan because he is a potential starter and also a great friend of mine.  Overall he is a great basketball player.  He is also an excellent student.  He gets invited to all the honors banquets and got a plaque for being one of the best in his grade in social studies.  He is in the top ten in his grade for academics.  He stands out because he is a great athlete.  By the time he graduates he would like to have a 4.6 GPA.  He is in tenth grade so he has some time to work on accomplishing his plans in life.  First, he would like to finish high, then go to college. He wants to go into things with sports, such as being a coach, or go into sports management.  He wants to make sure that his dreams are pursued and he does is what he wants to do.

He does love basketball, but baseball is his favorite sport.  His favorite food is steak.  He loves the movie "Dodge-ball".  His favorite classes are math and any gym class.  His favorite professional basketball team is the Cleveland Cavaliers, he also likes the Washington Redskins.  His favorite color is royal blue and he likes to play video games with his friends.

His favorite moment from high school so far is when Zack shaved his head for a bet.  If Zack keeps his head shaved for the rest of basketball season, then he get $15 and a free hot dog, fries and a drink for the whole summer.  He made that bet with the coach of the team, his teammates also made a bet with him that if he shaved off his eyebrows then they will give him $500.  Zack is one of Ryan’s best friends, so this is a very funny memorable time for him.  Ryan will most likely have a great season and I hope that he does. These are supposed to be the best times of his life, he is going to make the best of them.

The main purpose of the of the match is to see where the team is at and what they need physically, mentally, and as a team.

Coach Tomaso said, “This match is a building block on the season to see what the team is good at and what they need to improve on. And obviously to win this tournament we have to wrestle hard and very well.” The teams that are participating in the Aurora Tournament Duels are Madison, Aurora, Padua, and North Royalton.

Jack Whaley, the assistant principal of Madison High School, has always been a huge fan of the wrestling team. He has his expectations for Saturdays match. “My expectations for the beginning of the season is to be in better shape than the other opponents. It gives them a chance to win. I have seen a lot of these kids work hard in the off season and that will help with the tournament this weekend.”

Captain, Brody Arrundale, said that he is ready to put all his work into this tournament and that he is ready to put Aurora, Padua, and North Royalton in their place. Performing This Weekend… The Jazz Band!

By: Amelia Marlow

This Saturday, November 18, the MHS Jazz Band will be performing at Band-a-Palooza. This is a big fundraiser for the band program, featuring the Middle School bands performing in the High School gym, and the Jazz Band playing in the lobby while a chicken dinner is served. There will also be a Chinese Auction, offering many cool items and baskets that people can try to win.

Band-a-Palooza is an important event to the Jazz Band as it is their first formal event of the school year. In addition to being fun, it gives them an opportunity to play for people during dinner, much like a “dinner band.”
The Jazz Band will be playing six songs: “In the Mood,” “Make Me Smile,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Route 66,” “I Found a New Baby,” and “Down and Dirty.” Twenty one musicians make up the Jazz Band: Quinn Aiken, Alex Bihary, Richie Camp, Shane Cress, Emma Ely, Zane Erich, Cammy Gmitra, Karson Hahn, Thomas Haught, Owen Hennessey, Ashton Keller, Chrissy Kurilec, Raven Morgan, Emma Norman, Ethan Petro, Hannah Potter, Anthony Qualey, Devin Rabenold, Caroline Sabo, Wyatt Vernyi, and Isaac Warren.

Mr. Tomko, the band director, likes how every band is represented and everyone gets to perform. The sixth grade can hear the seventh and eighth grade bands and will have a chance to hear the kind of music they will play in the future. Mr. Tomko said, “It’s a great event. It gets all the middle school bands together to hear each other and the Jazz Band gets to play for dinner. It’s a lot of fun for everyone involved. So come out and hear good music and eat chicken!”

A New Beginning

BY: Jordn Pasalaqua

This year the Lady Blue Streaks Basketball team has three returning seniors; Aly Berry, Shyenne Ledford, and Sierra Hulderman. Aly Berry is a four year letterman for basketball, and Shyenne Ledford is a three year letterman. The girls team had lost  four key players due to not wanting to play anymore and also injuries they had with their other sports.

Alyssa Rose is out with an ankle injury that she had during summer by sliding into third base and having to have two surgeries on it. Grace Terelmes is out for the whole season with an knee injury which she has to also get two surgeries to have it all healed.

Brannigan Cramb and Syd Guyer have been added to the varsity squad full time and will be seeing a lot of minutes on the court. Coach Smith has also added freshman Chloe Wakim and Lydia Schafer. Coach Smith’s expectations for this years season is to work really hard during practices and to be ready for all of their competitions. He really wants the girls to try their best and work as hard as they can for this season.

The girls have already had two scrimmages and have won both. Their first game is on November 11th at Kirtland High school. The girls love being with each other on and off the court and are ready for this years season to start.

Here Comes The Boys!

BY: Isabel Gnagy

It is well known that this year for the boys basketball team we have a new coach: Nick Gustin, our new coach from the Perry Village and now the Head coach for the Varsity boys basketball. He’s also the golf pro at our very own Erie Shores Golf Course here in Madison. Luckily our Madison pride has persuaded him to come over from Perry and coach.

There are some big shoes for Coach Gustin to fill with last seasons record of 9-1 with Coach Moran. The players respect and congratulate Coach Moran for going to JCU to coach with his brother, Pete Moran.

This past Friday and Saturday the Boys Basketball  team was made official by the new head coach of the team. Previously the JV coach for last year, Nick Gustin, has made his way up to be the head coach with Mr. Titman as the assistant coach. This year the new head coach has made some big changes to the team. With a tight and strict selection process there are some faces that won’t be seen this year. Your 2017-2018 team consists of Ronald Hartman, Griffin Albert, Marcus Horton, Mark Primer, Nate Fawver, JD Galivoic, Alex Dragas, Chris Blauman, Brendon Snopel, Jared Anderson, Garrett Franczeck, Justus Albert, and Ian Duthie.  Griffin Albert thinks that Coach Gustin is nice and says, “we have new system this year with our offense and defense”.

This year the boys are hoping to play just as good or even better than last season. There are no negative vibes from the Madison High School Boys Basketball team toward their 2017-2018 season that will be starting this Saturday against Conneaut at 9 in the morning here at Madison High School. Please come out and support your boys on there start of their season! Go blue!

Turkey Time

BY: Emily Johnston

Saturday, November 4th, the Madison Competition Cheerleaders started off their season with their first competition, “Turkey Time”. The girls have been preparing for this competition for months. They have spent hours creating, learning, and perfecting their routine. Competition practices consist of running, jumping, and doing the routine several times over. The team consists of 13 girls ranging from freshmen to seniors.

The girls routine is 2 minutes and 30 seconds long. It starts with an intro cheer, leading into a short dance. Then a cheer, going into the final dance. Since the routine is short, it has to be adrenaline packed the whole time. The girls focus on strict motions, high jumps, and smiling and having fun.

This competition was at the Wolstein center in Cleveland State, creating an exciting environment. Madison’s division is called Varsity Non-Mount, Non-Tumble. Their division consisted of two teams at this competition. Madison took first place in their division, and 2nd place out of all the divisions. The girls were .15 points away from being grand champions and getting first out of all of the divisions. They are scored on a scale out of 100.

The girls felt really good about their performance, but hope to do even better in the future. The next competition is December 2nd, in Erie, Pennsylvania. The competition is called “Lights! Camera! Action!” They don’t know what teams they will be against yet, but they’re hoping to beat themselves and score even higher than at “Turkey Time”.

Jack's Journey Through the Junior Year: The WiFi Crisis

BY: Jack Tagliamonte

This is a real problem, there is a serious situation at 3100 Burns Road. This school's WiFi is already a piece of poop lathered in more poop wrapped in your dad's sweaty underwear which was dunked in a vat of skunk spray, but somehow it got worse, they have been blocking apps, websites, and the VPN's to get them back. They've been doing the blocking website thing since day 1 because they knew at least one kid would be looking up some pornographic images or something, but taking down Instagram and Snapchat is just going too far, don't worry Twitter fans, that little slice of social media is safe because Fish himself is a Twitter man and no one cares about Facebook anymore, so if you want to play Farmville with your Aunt Carol then you're set.

Snapchat and Instagram are a whole new thing, they're a slice of the current outside world, it's also a main form of communication for me because I don't actually text anyone, Snapchat has been my way of finding rides and getting money for lunch because my mom doesn't love me enough to answer me when I DO text her, overall Snapchat is just a tool I have to use and the school preventing it makes things a lot harder to know where I'm going after school. Instagram no one really uses for something actually important other than looking at their friends post about their super cool sandwich and a tall frappe with vanilla extract with a hint of genuine cacao or some pretty bad quality memes.

There's just no reason to take down the apps that do nothing but let others see what their doing in their classes, like most teachers are cracking down on phones anyway so what are they going to gain from blocking it from the ones in study hall or in free time for when classes end early.

A Closing Smile

BY: Jordan Pasalaqua

This year's Madison Girls Varsity Volleyball team has ended their season with a record of 14-9, they were also 5-5 for the conference. They had many accomplishments in this years season. The girls won the Pink Jug back from the Madison vs. Perry game that was held at Madison High School. The last time the girls had the jug was in 2013.

This year the Riverside Beavers were the Madison Girls' toughest opponent. Weeks before the game the girls worked their hardest at practice and were getting ready for their tough match. This game was held at Riverside High School, the Beavers home court advantage. The girls started off really strong and kept their intensity up the whole entire game. The girls still only played 3 games in all, but they fought their hardest and kept all the games close. The player who stood out the most during the game was Senior Shyenne Ledford. She had around around 10 blocks during the game, four of them in a row. The girls were upset that they lost but in the end they knew that they played their hardest and gave it their all and were still happy with the outcome.

The girls traveled out to Euclid where Euclid High School were hosting sectionals. The Madison Girls were facing Cleveland heights in the first round. They only played three games but they were really close. The girls pulled through and came out with a win. The girls next game was on a Thursday against North at Euclid High School again. The girls came out hard and strong to try and keep their season going but the girls could not pull through. The girls played three games but they were all close and the girls battled hard.

The Madison Girls Volleyball team had a really good season. They are proud of what they have accomplished this season and they are proud to be a team. The girls can not wait for next year. Good luck to all the seniors for their future plans for next year.

Bringing the Storm

BY: Adrianna Hanzak

Throughout the 2017 season the Lady Blue Streaks had gone above and beyond, just about breaking six school records. As of Monday, October 23, you can consider it seven.

In the past, the Lady Streaks battled against the Mentor Cardinals on three occasions, never succeeding to deliver a shot into the back of their net, but on Monday they crossed paths yet again on Madison's home field to take on the fourth crusade.

The Lady Blue Streaks took on the first half with more fight than they have amid the entirety of the season. The Streaks brought the storm and made one eminent cross delivered by Hailey Nichols and a climactic shot taken by Mykayla Askew, as she bounced it off of the side post and into the far side of the net, the first goal in Lady Blue Streak history to be counted against the Mentor Cardinals.

Closing the half with a lead of 1-0, the Lady Blue Streaks were determined to not only take the first goal against the Cardinals, but also the first clean sheet.  With the defense that easily held out the ambitious teams on their season lineup, Defensive Captain Victoria Tromba made a feasible statement at halftime that every defender in the locker room surely took to heart: "The offense did their job, now we have to do ours."

The second half was the Lady Blue Streak's time to be determined in proving that the storm was here to stay. Throughout the half, the Streaks not only held the Cardinals out, but delivered yet another shot into the net by a subliminally placed shot from Kaitlyn Rohl. As the game came to a close, Monday, October 23 not only marked the first time the Lady Blue Streaks scored against the Cardinals, but added another clean sheet to their growing record.

Thursday, October 26 the Lady Blue Streaks are taking the trip to Eastlake North to take on the Mayfield Wildcats, in hopes of taking home the District Champion title. Come support the Lady Blue Streaks as they take the road to see if the Wildcats can weather their storm.

Freshman’s Astounding Win!

BY: Iszabelle Vliek

Thursday night was an exciting day for our freshman football players. The crowd went crazy as our boys kept putting the points up on the scoreboard. We faced the Kenston Bombers at home, winning with the score of 42-14. The year before, we lost to Kenston by 4 points making the score 20-16.  This game was important because it shows our improvement and redemption.

The top 3 performers during this game were Brad Mckeon, Matty Vliek, and Jacob Laurie. There was a total of 5 touchdowns scored, being Vliek, Mckeon, Havens, Tweedy, and Myers. Coach Reed and O’Brien called many good plays leading to the victory. Both coaches were very proud of the boys for their hard work and dedication.

The first quarter of the game we scored our first touchdown and we were feeling confident. During the second quarter the opposing team scored their first touchdown, making the score even. During half-time the coaches gave a pep-talk to the boys and knew they needed to step up their game. During the third quarter Kenston scores their second touchdown but our players don’t lose hope. Throughout the third and fourth quarter we scored our last four touchdowns beating the other team and leaving the crowd astonished.

The Madison freshman football team will be facing Willoughby North this next coming Thursday on North’s home field. Having this be the second to last game of the season we will be cheering them on the rest of the way, only hoping for wins here on out.

Kamryn Kincaid, Varsity Cheer Captain

BY: Emily Johnston

Kamryn Kincaid is a Madison High School varsity cheerleader and captain. She’s seventeen years old and a senior in high school. She has been a cheerleader for four years and has lettered three of them. She is only a football cheerleader, however, she used to do competition and basketball cheer. Kamryn’s main goal of high school was to succeed and to have fun. She said that cheer leading has made her four years of high school memorable and she is thankful to have had so much fun and laughter with her close friends these past years.

Kam was also on homecoming court this year. She was very thankful that her classmates voted her on court. She said that it was a great experience with her peers. The assembly was her favorite part of being on homecoming court. On Friday’s homecoming game, she walked across the track and got announced with the rest of homecoming court and then proceeded to cheer on our football players after.

After high school, Kamryn wants to go to college to major in physical therapy. She’s undecided where she wants to go as of now. However, she doesn’t plan on continuing her cheer leading career in college.

Kamryn has been cheer leading since 7th grade and prior to that she did gymnastics. It takes up a lot of her free time.

Kam is a well-rounded student and athlete and has succeeded in school and sports during her high school career. “Cheer has been a great experience and even though we had a rough year being out there supporting the football players, I still had fun”, Kamryn said. She said that she knows that she is going to miss her high school years of being a cheerleader but she’s excited to move on with her life outside of high school.

Homecoming Assembly

BY: Joshua Smith

At the homecoming assembly they announced the homecoming court. They presented a cool and funny trailer that introduced the court. In their trailer they had a beach and water theme because homecoming's theme is under the sea. After that they played games such as Hungry Hungry Hippos, Musical Chairs, Guess that Lyric, Plunger Crawl, and Balloon Pop. They ended up in a tie, to decide who wins they did rock paper scissors and they did a big dance for the halftime show.

The songs they played were pretty cool and it went well with all the dancing they did, I got some quotes from the court and they said:

“It was a lot of fun and I had a great time with all my friends.” -Matt G."Very grateful and and had a fantastic time.” Kammy K."It was great to see the school come together and have a great time.” -Owen Myers “I'm happy that my senior class voted for me on court and I'm so glad they had as much fun as we did.” -Ireland Bittner-Ford“It was very memorable experience to share with my selected friends who made the court along with me and thanks to the rest of the senior class who made it even more memorable.” -Kaylee Kless“It was cool, it was a lot for work to learn the dance and it was was fun.” -Mark PrimerIt was an honor to be nominated, and making the dance was a blast.” -Gabby Blackford
