After about 20 minutes of waiting, Madison’s Wrestling team was placed 2nd in the WRC Tournament. The team was only half a point behind Riverside who took 1st. As heartbreaking as it was the team still was very successful in this tournament, with lots of wrestlers placing in there weight classes and making pin after pin. The day was long but very exciting.
As the tournament started, Madison dominated. Douglas Bailey won his 1st match, Shayne Magda won his 1st match with a pin, Brody Arrundale won his 1st match with a pin, and Logan Blough won his 1st match with a pin. Lots of wrestlers won their first matches putting Madison in a great spot from the beginning. Shayne, Douglas, and David won their second matches.
After the short lunch break finals started. David, Shayne, Douglas, and Derick Zirkle were competing for 1st or 2nd place. Brody and Dom Zirkle were competing for 3rd or 4th.
David Thompson placed first in his weight division, this was his first time placing first place in WRC. Shayne Magda placed 1st in his weight division, and Derick Zirkle also won first in his weight division.
Brody placed third in his weight division, winning the match with a pin. At this point in the tournament it came down to Dom. Dom had to win his match with a pin. As the only match left going everyone in the gym was going crazy cheering on Dom as he wrestled a Mayfield wrestler. Dom pushed himself as hard as he could and won the match with a pin. The gym went crazy, the score had to be counted up still but everyone knew it was going to be close.
With the final score being 187.5, Riverside took 1st with 188. As upsetting as it was Madison still won. Every coach, fan, anybody from Madison is so unbelievably proud of these boys. Up next for the team is the Perry Match. Then they have sectionals. With little season left the team is going to push as hard as they can to bring home as many victories as possible.
