Cranking Out The Win

BY: Adrianna Hanzak

With the past events of Madison bringing seven fouls and South delivering 9 on the field, there is no doubt that tension thickened the air shortly after the whistle blew. The Lady Streaks, previously winning over Brush and Riverside in the Western Reserve conference, were on their third conference game and had an undefeated title in the WRC on the line.

Although the first half was underway, there were not many opportunities that stood out greatly against the Rebels. Although, we delivered our shots into the back of the net, taking the lead and settling at halftime with a two to zero lead as our Lady Streaks gathered at the goal for their half time talk.

The plot thickened into the second half when the aggression picked up on both sides. With questionable calls being made on the plays, the official was receiving many unfavorable comments from the players on the bench. Although there were some hard hits coming from the Rebels, defender Emma Weaver stood tough, keeping her composure as she was fouled and the witnesses breathed a breath of relief when the assistant referee relentlessly beckoned the head referee to discuss the foul. While they waited patiently, the audience in the visiting stands were relieved that the officials had decided to give the South player a red card.

Soccer being a contact sport, aggression to an extent is inevitable. While the Lady Blue Streaks held it together stealing a four to zero win on paper, their game on the field was uncertain in its entirety. A team having an off day and still winning is uncommon, and in head coach Chad Butler's words, "The best kind of teams know how to crank out wins even when they aren't feeling it."
