On Thursday, September 21st, the Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team played a match at home. Coached by Mr. Brainard, they began the day against Chardon with an 11-3-0 record. This match was important for Madison as Chardon was ranked 2nd in the conference and are a big rival. Before the game took place, JV player Isabel Gnagy predicted Lauren Bernard, Alexis Gonzalez, and Paige Potter would win or at least tie. Coach Brainard also said the match would be close, go down to the last minute and predicted a Madison win as well.
Unfortunately, the Varsity Team lost 2-3. Coach Brainard explained that Chardon has a good team and played tough. Although they didn’t win, Madison played tough, too. Tessa Karran said she “played well” and her “serves were pretty good.” Hannah Andrews played with new partner, Lauren Bernard, and they “did well and her communication skills with Lauren were great.” I think each girl made a very strong effort and there were some great volleys with key shots. At the end, it came down to a nailbiter match that sealed the win for Chardon.
The top three performers for Madison were singles-player Tessa Karran; doubles-team Paige Potter and Alexis Gonzalez; and doubles-team Lauren Bernard and Hannah Andrews. Tessa Karran won 6-2 in set one and won the second set 6-0. Paige Potter and Alexis Gonzalez lost 4-6 in set one and lost 6-7 in a close second set, with a tiebreaker score 3-7. Lauren Bernard and Hannah Andrews won 7-5 in their first set and won 6-4 in their second set.
Moving forward, Coach Brainard said the team is almost done with their season. They have three more regular matches and are getting ready for conference and sectionals. Tessa Karran said she has a 13-2 record that will help her prepare for future matches. Hannah Andrews said she hopes she can play with Lauren Bernard more often and win more matches for her team. I think if the team can band together and finish strong, they will have good momentum the postseason.
The Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team plays their next match at home against North on Monday, September 25th.
