Up All Night

Jillian Jeschenig
By: Alyssa Molnar

This past weekend the babies went out yet again to their mothers and fathers. Jillian Jeschenig took her baby Grayson out to many different places. He got to experience a basketball game as well as a wrestling match. He also got to go out to lunch at Joeys and Chipotle. Jillian says that taking care of the baby was very tiring, she didn’t sleep a lot and that it cries a lot, but she got off the hook with only 70 min of cry time some people had it way worse.

Summer Houston who also had to take care of a baby says that she didn’t sleep for three days but only had 55 minutes of cry time. She didn’t like having the baby because she couldn’t do much but she ended up taking the baby to a party and to a midnight trip to taco bell. Overall she wishes it was more realistic.

Lastly Dom Osborne and his baby Lily had a rough time. He recalls that the baby cried for a total of 244 minutes which is a lot. He took his baby to a wrestling meet as well and he also got very little sleep. Overall they all wish the baby was more realistic and didn’t keep you up all night.

What She Expects Out of the Season

By: Angel West

Zoey Fedele is a swimmer for the YMCA and she has been swimming for about 6 years! She loves to be in the water and working really hard. Her goals from this season is to make it to high school states for her event which is the 100 fly with a time faster than 56.59. Her expectation is to qualify for states this year, as long as she keeps working hard and doing everything she can. Zoey also wants to get a relay to qualify for districts, if not this year she hopes for next year. Her favorite memory is when she got her first National time, swimming with the guys (Joey Smith, Zembower Twins, Collin Douglas) and her 2018 WRC meet when she beat her time, she came in first for both of her events, and then got the WRC record for 100 fly.

New Season, First Win

By: Kennedy Rochford

On Tuesday, December 4th the Varsity boys basketball had their home opener against Geneva. Last year Geneva took the win, this year they played for revenge.

After a good game of hustle and great defense Madison took the win this time with a score of 76-64.This starting off their season with the first win making the record 1-0. This game gave them confidence and momentum going into their game coming up on Thursday against Kenston and the rest of their basketball season this year.

Some top performers of this game were Senior Ron Hartman and Juniors Ryan Bowers and Chris Blauman. Ron led his team with 28 points on the scoreboard, and shooting five 3 pointers, Chris added 21 points to the game and had six assists, Ryan had 14 points with four 3 pointers and seven rebounds. Overall during this game the boys had great defense, and that prevented them from getting the score down and losing.

Assistant coach, Coach Titman, said, “It was a hard fought basketball game, last year Geneva beat us with intensity and hustle, this year we were able to match that and knock down shots. The student section made an impact on the game, I hope to have that all year”. The fans had a made a huge difference on this game when they could always count on the crowd for the spirit section. The fans are always excited to watch the boys play a great game and are also pumped to watch how the boys play this season.

Court is in Session

By: Sydney Guyer

Going into a game against Kenston, a game that has been solely dominated by the other team for the past couple of years, the Madison Girls Basketball team agrees that they need to work together, use each other, and find one another more on the court to help bring home their fourth win of the season.

As heard from Ashlee Hathaway, Kenston will put up a good fight for the entire game while also punishing the mistakes made by Madison to help push themselves towards victory, but with a fearless and scrappy team like the Madison girls team, they will stop at nothing to try and defeat the Bombers.

With the team expecting the scoreline to be close, point guard Chloe Wakim is expected to bring the intensity and the 3's while center Jess Schafer is expected to bring the support and encouragement the team needs to take down the Bombers.

The game against the Bombers marks the Madison girls' first WRC game of the season, with Coach Smith's undeniable wish to keep the winning streak alive. According to Coach Smith, one of the major keys of success to the game of basketball is "to score more points than the other team".

With the team starting the season as 3-1, the girls are on track to be a team that other standout teams in the conference, such as Eastlake North, Mayfield, and Chardon, are going to have to look out for throughout the season and then worry about later in the playoffs.

She has high hopes for a great basketball season and plans on making her last season of cheer her best yet. She loves cheering with all the other girls, who are like a family to her.

Haley’s extremely dedicated and has worked very hard throughout her cheering career. Her fellow teammates talk very highly of her, and say she has great jumps and she’s very animated when she performs. She always tries to get the crowd excited for the games. As for the rest of her high school career, she would like to earn her honors diploma and continue to hold her 4.0 GPA.

When asked about her most memorable moment of high school, she said she loved the pep assemblies for the football team, which are always fun. She enjoyed seeing everyone getting hyped up and excited before the games. After high school, Haley would like to attend college and either major in criminology or psychology. Haley’s favorite movie is “The Greatest Showman” and her favorite class is human behavior with Mrs. Gilligan. One of her favorite pastimes is watching the Browns with her family on football Sundays.

Are You Ready?

By: Taylor Stevens

Shayne Magda is coming back for his final high school season of wrestling with big plans. Coming off a great season of football, Shayne is ready to have a phenomenal season of wrestling. Last season Shayne was the only wrestler on the Madison team to qualify for states, all the he did not make it far, it is still a great accomplishment.

Shayne’s biggest goal of his senior season to place in states. To reach his goal, he is working as hard as he can in the wrestling room. Every day at practice he puts in all his energy so he can reach his goal of placing in states, or even winning states. Shayne believes this season is going to go very well. They have a lot of talent coming to the matt this year.

Not giving up this season and always giving his 100% is what is going to help him throughout this season. Shayne expectations for the team is to make it farther in state duels, and for himself he expects to always push himself as hard as he can.

His message to the underclassmen is to never give up and just always work hard. If you work hard you’ll get to places. Being his last season of wrestling he is sad, and is truly going to miss this sport a lot. There is a possibility that Shayne will play in college. The Inspiring Story of Alexis Randall

By: Alyssa Knezevich

Alexis Randall is a junior at Madison High School, and is also part of the Varsity football, basketball, and competition squad for the 2018 school year. Alexis has had years of experience as a Madison cheerleader.. She made the cheerleading squad when she was in middle school, and has been involved every year. Alexis says, “Cheer plays a special part in my heart, I really love being part of a team and working hard with my closest friends by my side.”

Unfortunately, Alexis came across a medical problem two years ago. She kept on feeling pain in her ankle. It got so bad that she had to start going through physical therapy. There was a time where she noticed that it still wasn’t getting better.

Alexis went to the hospital to get her second MRI and found out terrible news. She had a rare problem where she had a third tendon in her ankle when she was only supposed to have two. The doctors told her that she would need surgery, and it would take a total of six months to recover. This means no more cheer for the rest of the season, including competition.

This was heartbreaking news for Alexis. She knew she couldn’t do anything to change what happened, and had to figure out what she wanted to do. She could either get surgery now and be out for the rest of the season, or postpone the surgery until next year. She decided that the best idea would be to get the surgery now, so she could cheer the whole season next year when she is a senior.

Alexis continues to go to practices, and games to support her friends and help them continue to get better and better each day for the upcoming basketball season. Alexis says, “I couldn’t miss being with my friends. I am still a cheerleader for my school, and I will continue to do what I can, no matter what it takes.” Alexis will attend the competitions and cheer for her friends. She said the goal for this year's competition squad is to do their best and try to win grand champions. “This year’s competition squad has the most people we have ever had. There is a total of 21 girls. I feel like this year is going to be an exciting year since there are so many of us.” The girls first competition is this Saturday, the first of December. They will have many competitions this season and Alexis will continue to support her friends, and is looking forward for her senior year.

LCMEA / Fox News Band Interview

By: Gavin Dooley

On September 26 the Madison Marching Band went to the Lake County Music Educators Association’s 2018 Marching Band Festival, (or LCMEA for short). It is an opportunity for bands to play their halftime performances for people. This is also not a competition, the event is for people who like music to be able to see the bands’ performances where they wouldn’t have been able to see them.

This event also allows for bands to get closer to each other and the community. Eleven other bands also participated in the event to show their support. Also, the members who were able to attend said that they had a blast and thought it was important for our community. The community also agreed that they had a blast being able to see all these bands play for them.

Another important event that the band has to attend is their meeting with Fox News! The band will be driving out to their studio on October 19th. They have to leave at 4:30 AM, that isn’t going to be fun, however they will get to perform live on Fox in the morning! I find this to be good for Madison’s reputation.

This event will be able to show the skills and talent of the Madison Band. Although not all members of the band are attending this, it will still be impressive. Let’s hope our band good luck on their performance for Fox News in the morning!

A Good Day To Be A Blue Streak

BY: Adrianna Hanzak

Tuesday, October 2 is a memorable date in the books for the JV Lady Blue Streaks Soccer Team. Within the many battles that have been scattered across the Lady Blue Streaks’ schedule in the past years, this was the only match where the Wildcats couldn't survive the storm.

Never before taking a win against Mayfield, the Lady Blue Streaks brought the storm to their home field, pressuring the Wildcats from the start of the first half, and delivered two shots into the back of their net by halftime whistle. They took on the second half with the same intensity as the first, striking the back of the net two more times before the time ran out. With four goals made by freshmen Ryan Burns and Reagan Swinarski and Sophomore Bella Perez, the Lady Blue Streaks make their mark on the soccer program and took the first win against the Mayfield Wildcats.

Perez, delivering two of the four goals to the remarkable win, said that what she felt helped the Lady Blue Streaks to carry out the win was the fact that they worked together as a team, completing the simple plays and cut off passes and mistakes made by the Wildcats. The Blue Streaks played their game with passion, making their hard work pay off and making their supporters proud.

"It was a good day to be a Blue Streak!" said Perez.

Are You Ready For The Behms?

By: Dawn Brassow

Fresh new talent has been brought to the Madison Volleyball team. These freshman have proven what talent they have this year. The Behms are identical twins, they have a great bond on and off the court. They have been playing volleyball since 5th grade starting with Deva and plan on playing JO this year. Laney is the setter and Ella hits outside for the team for the freshman team.

The girls have a lot of activities outside volleyball, they are members of Madison's band, and they also run for the track team. They both get good grades and plan on going to the same college together. Ella wants to be an accountant and Laney doesn't know what she wants to be yet. For the rest of highschool they plan on getting good grades and making it the best 4 years they can.

Their most memorable moments in high school would have to be homecoming, hanging out with friends and having fun. They have a lot in common they love the movie Nerf, Spanish Class, watch volleyball on TV, all Cleveland Sports Teams and have twin-tallepathy. During the South volleyball game Laney hurt her elbow and Ella started to cry.

Laney the Behms have a lot of raw talent they still have a lot to improve on the next 3 years they will continue to grow and improve their skills. The teams is looking forward to watch them improve together and individually. Be ready to watch them finish this season and the seasons to come.

Cheering On The Boys

By: Jillian Jeschenig

Junior, Caelyn Pritschau, is a two-year varsity member of both the football and basketball cheer teams here at MHS. She is also a captain for the competition team, which she has been a part of for three years.

Besides cheer, she is also apart of student council, key club,  women’s choir, and is a straight A student. Caelyn has great energy on the sidelines and is always nice to everyone she meets. She has a great personality and always tries to get the boys hyped up and excited to play, regardless of the score.

When asked about her experience on the team, she said, “Being on the team is like being apart of a big family, we all love to laugh and mess around with each other”. She always shows up to the games with a great attitude, ready to hype up the boys. “I think we’ve had a really good season so far, despite our record. I really enjoy cheering on the boys under the lights every Friday. I can’t wait for basketball and competition season to begin.”

Goals that Caelyn has for the rest of her high school career are to place in states with the competition cheer team and maintain her good grades. Some of her favorite moments from high school so far have been seeing Rocky win homecoming queen, winning nationals with the competition team her freshman year, and Project Unify.

In the future, Caelyn would like to study dermatology. She has been looking at many different colleges, some being The Ohio State University and Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu. She really wants to travel to different countries like Greece, Sweden, and Italy. In her spare time, Caelyn likes to hang out with her friends and her boyfriend, watch movies, go out to eat, and spend time with her family.

Tackling Freshman Year

BY: Angel West

Daniel Mccabe has done an awesome job in the season. So far, he has gotten a fumble recovery from the other team and he has gotten a lot of tackles. He has gotten an honor roll,  plays on the freshman football team and plans on playing baseball.

When I asked him for a quote he said, “The harder you practice, the better you get!”. Other than football, what makes him stand out is that he is a funny, energetic person who makes everyone around him laugh and smile which is what he likes to do best.

His high school plans are to get straight A’s and help assist his team to a victory in football. His most memorable moment in high school so far is Homecoming because he got to hangout with his friends and dance to awesome music. His future plans after high school are to go to college and hopefully get a scholarship for football. He wants to become a mechanic when he gets out of college.

Daniels favorite movie to watch is the titanic, his favorite class is global history. His favorite teacher here at MHS is Mrs. Gilligan and he loves to eat mac n’ cheese. Daniel is an outgoing person and is really nice. He is really excited to play with an amazing team.

The Comeback of Cori Queen

BY: Kelsey Burkholder

It was a tough game for the Madison JV girls. The game was for a great cause.  We raised a lot of money. The highlight of the game was when Cori Queen got to come in to serve for a few points.  It was a surprise her getting to go in. The coaches didn’t tell her until a few points ahead of time.

It was really hard all of us trying to talk her into warming up because she didn’t want to take the balls away from the other girls.  This caused her to miss her first serve. However, she made it up with her serving a few more times and making them great serves. This was such a special moment for her and the whole team because she had surgery on her ACL and it was her first time in all season.

They fought very hard but were just short of getting a victory.  The JV and freshman joined together for the game since Perry didn’t have a freshman.  In total there were nineteen girls that played for Madison. It was a big defeat the first game, however, the second game was very close.
There were two liberos and they were Angel West and Savanna West. They were both very scrappy and worked hard in the back row. The gym was very loud with the varsity team and other fans cheering them on.  It was a very good game and they worked very hard.

Overall it was a very good game and they fought really hard.  Hopefully next year they can take back the jug.

Dancing in the Spotlight

BY:Dominique Palker

Ashlee Jones is a Junior at Madison High School. She is also a member of Madison High Schools dance team and one of the two captions. The girls on the dance team would all agree that it would fall apart without her.
I asked Ashlee to tell me something about her and dance, she replied with: “I've been dancing for how long, and I still can’t count past 8.” This made me laugh. Ashlee enjoys dancing more than anything else. She also enjoys watching baseball, eating pizza and hanging out with her best friends, Hailey, Rylie, Dom, and Savanna.
Right now Ashlee is a junior in high school and goes to auburn in the morning for cosmetology. She said auburn is her favorite class, I then asked her who her favorite teacher at MHS is she told me it is Mr. Harold, who teaches English and act/sat prep.
Ashlee stands out to me, she can balance school, work, dance and family and still find time to hang out with friends. She has perfect attendance and has won an academic award the past two years. I asked her what her favorite high school memory is and she told me, 2018 Project Unify, I then asked her why and she then told me with a smile on her face, “I loved dancing during half time and seeing all the smiles and hearing the cheers from the whole school.” She then said, “I love seeing how the hole school came together as one”. This made me very happy to hear.
I asked Ashlee what she wants to do after high school, she said “ I would like to attend West Virginia University and study general business.” Ashlee is a spotlight player and deserves to be recognized.

The Drumline Band Bash

BY: Gavin Dooley

The Madison band participated in the Drumline Band Bash and competed with other schools to have the best performance. Only the percussionists participate in all 6 schools. Each school plays their fight songs and try to get votes from the audience to win. One dollar from the audience means one vote.
At the end of the competition, Madison did their best but Riverside came and stole the win. Some students say that Madison should have been the winner, for example Brooke Howley said: “Madison should have won 😄“
But overall every band had put on an amazing performance and had definitely done their job at entertaining the audience. The students that went to attend all have positive things to say about the event. Student are describing the event as epic, fun, and entertaining. Even the judges were shocked at how great Madison did. One audience member even paid 30 dollars at once for Madison!
Bands who played also did more than just playing in their performance. For example Madison put their band members in different formations like an omega. A performer was even turned upside down while playing! Other schools did popular dances which were pretty fun to watch.
Our band also had an amazing time while playing for the crowd. One member from the band says this: “It was a great way to help the community through something fun and exciting,” said Kyle Wood. I and the other spectators wish that Madison performs again.

Kickin' It Into 2018

BY: Toni Burr
The Madison boys varsity soccer team is back and better than ever for another great season! They’ve been practicing all summer for this season! Last night, Thursday August 30th, the team traveled all the way to Edgewood and won their game, Madison 4 - Edgewood 2. The boys have been practicing very hard, and all of their hard work paid off in this game!
During the first half on the match we had our first goal from our Senior, Colton Skoch. Then we also had a goal from Coleton Phipps, and our last goal in the first half of the game was from Gage Vannoy. During the second half we only had one goal, which was made from Fabi Ruiz. Edgewood had one goal in each half.
The boys have been doing great this season, they have won 3 games so far and they have only lost 1 game to Geneva. They have had practice almost every morning during the summer and you can see how much it has paid off so far in the season! The team is together almost everyday and bonds over everything. They all treat each other like a second family.
The boys’  next game is Tuesday, September 4th at Madison High School at the varsity field against Brush. Hope to see everyone there cheering our soccer boys on! Good luck boys on the next game boys!

Streaks in Full Force

BY: Taylor Stevens

The streaks dominated the field last Friday night. Taking their second win of the season against Lakeside, 29-0. From the start the Blue Streaks controlled the field, the entire game they did. The players kept their heads high when Lakeside players started playing dirty. Madison is in Perry week mode.
As the week started, the football players are practicing hard and preparing for the Perry game. Every player is prepared to play as hard as they can to beat Perry and bring the Brown Jug home. Coach Head’s prediction for this game is “17-10, Madison with the win. By the end of the first quarter it will be tied up 3-3. 2nd quarter Madison will make a big play and make the score 10-3. 3rd quarter will come around and Perry will make their big play of the night making the score 10-10. 4th quarter will wind down and Madison will score, Perry will have 1:30 to score, Madison’s defense will prevent that from happening. Then, Madison will take a knee and bring home the Brown Jug.” Players are ready to beat Perry and show them how much they improved and not to look down on them anymore. They’re ready to play hard and show them 212 effort.
Everyone is ready for the game. With the pep assembly Friday and it just being Perry week the high energy is in the air. Perry week is one of the favorite parts of the year for a majority of the student body. Get ready for a great intense game this Friday night. Be there.

A Week of Volleyball for MHS

BY: Kennedy Rochford

This week was a long week for the varsity volleyball with a total of four games, losing to Geneva and Kenston, and having success against Edgewood and Lakeside. They had their first game against at home versus Geneva, it was a little shaky because it was their first game as a team, so everyone was still learning their positions and their teammates.

After taking a loss the team practiced and became stronger, winning their second game against Edgewood everyone found their positions and are starting to come together as a team and give everything into the games. The third game was against Kenston which was a very good games against a hard team, they all played together as a team giving it their all.

The last game they had this week was against Lakeside, winning in four games, this game was very energetic, they cheered so loud that some of their voices went away from screaming so loud. Their communication was good and they improved so much from the first to their last game this week.

Captains Dawn Brassow and Brannigan Cramb said they still have a lot to work on like tweaking it up a little bit to become the best they can be, but they have high potential this volleyball season. They have a good team this season and they all mesh together like a family they are picking up the energy and having fun times together as a team.

It's Game Time!

BY: Kelsey Burkholder

Well they finally set a date for the Powderpuff game.  Yes it is officially a go. May 1st is the day to be ready; however, we do have a makeup day, May 2nd, in case there is snow on the field.  If there is still snow on the field then we won’t be playing this year. We told Fish we would play in the snow, but he didn’t want to handle cold. Instead he is doing it four days before prom. Smart, right? Let's just hope no one breaks their tiaras.

The captains for this event for the seniors are Alyssa Rose, Rachel Collins, Shyenne Ledford, and Maranda English. The juniors are Jordan Pasalaqua, and Alyssa Caruthers. The game will be coached by senior football players for the seniors and junior football players for the junior girls participating in this event. There will also be guy cheerleaders to cheer on both teams, let's hope the game isn’t fixed this year, but it will be. I predict that the juniors will be victorious. This game is a big deal; however, the only the winners get in the end is bragging rights.

Even though it is flag football there will still be some sweet tackles. The people in the stands get pretty wild, it something that the whole school will attend and even the middle school made an appearance last year. It should be a good game so don’t forget your gloves and winter coats because it will probably still be snowing. Be there, cheer them on, and watch the girls put in a 212 effort.
