Making Moves

The boys Varsity team has had an amazing season so far. Their record currently is at 8-2-2, and currently have only lost one game in their conference falling short against Riverside highschool. They are currently sitting at 42 goals so far this season, with the leading goal scorer being Fabian Ruiz-Diaz, and have the chance to break the previous school record of 44. The lads also look to set another school record by winning the most games in a regular season which is currently held at 9, and with 4 games left they should be able to make history for the highschool. Recently the Bluestreaks took on the Mayfield Cat's in a major conference match and it was do or die for the lads. In past years the Bluestreaks had fallen short to Mayfield, but dedication and hard work in the off season gave them a fighting chance. The game was hard fought and eventually the lads came out with a 2-0 victory with goals by Fabian Ruiz-Diaz and Cameron May, and Brian Keyser with 13 saves in goal. However Madison still has tough matchups ahead in the WRC against North and Kenston. The results of these matches will be the deciding factor in how the lads finish in the WRC. With the momentum gained from beating Mayfield there is a lot more to be expected from this team that has really came to play and show what Madison soccer is really about.

Perry Week

This week was Perry Week! Although it was by far one of the most eventful games of this year, the streaks did not bring home that brown jug. But the cheerleaders had a lot to say on the subject. They told me about how the game started out with many nerves but lots of excitement. They got to meet the other cheerleaders and share some laughs. Some of our girls even knew a few of the opponents cheerleaders.
As the game started they continued their peppy cheers and positive spirits. Junior, Maddie Pekar, stated “ We all knew this was our best chance at beating our rival so we all had high anxiety because we really wanted to see these boys succeed and accomplish something they’ve been working toward for so long”. Many of the girls agreed with her statement saying they overall enjoyed the whole first half because of how well our offense was doing.
After the first half went by, Perry’s announcer came over the speaker to let everyone know that a dangerous storm was coming that way. The cheerleaders and band all filed into the school and waited out the storm for almost 2 hours. Some would think that the thought of having to sit in that school for that long would be boring. But the lady streaks made the most of it.
Junior Emma Wade stated to me, “We explored the school, played games, and messed around with the band. We really tried to make it all as fun as possible. Especially because some of our best friends are the senior cheerleaders and we knew it was their last rivalry experience, so we wanted to make it the best.”
The game was eventually rescheduled to finish the final half that Saturday at 2pm. The cheerleaders were not required to cheer, but still came to cheer them on as much as possible from the stands. Senior Tiffany Hammond stated to me, “The game did not end in our favor but the boys still put up one of the biggest fights we’ve ever seen against those pirates. I can’t even remember the last night we got almost 40 points on Perry. We are all so unbelievably proud of them. Based on the hard work, determination, and fight they expressed, they’ve truly won in our hearts”.

Boys' Soccer Pregame

THE RITUAL

The idea of a pregame ritual is when an athlete finds something that they do before or sometimes after each and every game. I asked around the entire boys soccer team, JV and varsity, to see what they do and why.
I first asked CJ Kessler, one of the varsity captains and starters, he said that focus is the main goal of him and the entire team. In the locker room the boys play music to get them hyped up for the game. The upcoming game is constantly talked about among the boys to make sure they know what is coming for them and how to react the right way.
CJ states that “During warmups I usually go quiet. I focus on nothing else but the game and visualize what I need to do to help get the team a win in the end.”
Next I asked Justus Albert and Martín Arredondo, receiving about the same answer, both of the boys say a prayer before entering the game in hopes of good health and a good game for them and the team.
I also got to ask some of the JV boys what they do before every game and found that most of them find music being the most important thing they do before every game. Music helps the boys find their heads before the game and find the focus they need.
The break out of a team is always important to make the team excited to play the game that is within minutes of playing. The little things each player does could have no explanation and that’s what a pregame ritual consists of it also must be working for the boys with an amazing record of 8-2-2.

MHS Blood Drive

On Wednesday, September 25th the American Red Cross came to Madison high school for our third annual blood drive! Students over the age of 16 can sign up to donate blood for the blood drive. Donating blood is very important to people all around the world who are in need of a blood transfusion. Key club has organized this blood drive for three years straight with the local Red Cross. Madison has always had so many kids eager to donate blood, teachers donate as well. In order to donate blood, there are a couple qualifications you need to meet depending on your age and weight. Anyone can help out with the blood drive as long as you sign up to. It’s a great event to bring awareness to the importance of donating blood. One blood donor can save up to 3 different lives. Key club members have three different jobs in the blood drive, Supporter, signing people in, and taking passes to each class that has someone donating. President of key club Jordan Welton says, “ key club organizes this event every year twice a year”. After people get done checking in, and actually donate blood they sit down and can eat snacks and drinks, provided by key club, and hang out until they have rested enough to go back to class. Some people get lightheaded after giving blood so the key club workers make sure they give them lots of food and water. All the blood taken from the blood drive goes directly to the people who were hospitalized from hurricane Dorian. So make sure if you didn’t donate to this blood drive donate at the next to save lives!

JV Girls' Soccer - Madison at Mayfield

TWO FOR THE FUTURE

The Madison Girl’s junior varsity soccer team had an away match against the Mayfield Lady Wildcats on Tuesday, September 24th. The team came through with a 2-1 win, making their season record 6-5-1 overall, and 3-2 in the conference.
Right from the start of the game, the girls were playing fast-paced and putting in the effort to get the results they wanted and it paid off. The first goal of the game came from freshman, Melanie Hribar (forward), assisted by sophomore, Allyssa Cardile (midfield).
This goal hyped the girls up and gave them the push they needed to secure the win. The second goal of the game came from freshman, Emma MacAdam (midfield), off of a penalty kick at the end of the first half.
In response to our two goals in the first half, Mayfield came out strong in the second half and scored a goal right off the bat, making the score 2-1. The rest of the game was constantly back and forth between each team’s half, but no other goals were scored for the remainder of the game.
Heart beads went out to Jessica Ramirez (junior), Emma MacAdam (freshman), Autumn Hejduk (sophomore), and Olivia March (freshman), and the game ball was awarded to Allyssa Cardille.
The girl’s next game is home, against the Notre Dame Cathedral Latin (NDCL) Lady Lions on Thursday, September 26th. Although NDCL is not in our conference and they are no longer in our district, however they are one of our toughest competitors throughout the season.

Madison Marching Band 2019-2020

The band has been great entertainment at the football games this season. They fill the air with pure joy and excitement. They are a great way to hype everyone up that surrounds that game. The members of the band are finally coming together with the new band members and the new drum majors. Watching the band gives people chills especially when our football team scores a touchdown or even better wins the game. The music fills people’s ears in excitement and it is the finishing touch to a great night.

Not only are they at the games to excite people, but they have their own competitions with the other bands. It would be great if we got school spirit to support them at the Grape Jamboree Parade September 21st and their big LCMEA band show September 25th. They love to see students to support because they put a lot of hard work and dedication to their music, which sounds great. At the pep assembly for the game Madison vs Perry on September 13th, we had one of the members play the drums upside down and for that no other band is like ours. They really do put on a show. I interviewed Leah Frase, a junior student in the Madison Marching Band, to give an inside look on her views on marching band. She explains how when she joined the marching band it really gave her a place at Madison High School. She accomplished meeting new people, which today are her good friends. She loves football games because they come together and do cheers. “Whether the team is winning or losing it’s still always fun,'' she mentions. A big shoutout goes to the marching band.

Showing Support

These past few weeks of football have flown by and we’re already almost halfway through the season! We’ve had great turnouts for the spirit section at not only the football games, but both boys and girls soccer as well as volleyball. This past week we watched the boys play in a hard fought game against Perry that ended up being cut short at halftime due to storms. The game resumed the next day at 2 pm and we had a great crowd to cheer them on. Even though we may not have won the game, the boys held strong and put in their best efforts.

This week we’re facing the Willoughby South Rebels at home. The theme for the game is Hawaiian, which has become a favorite for the spirit section every year. It is also senior night for all fall sports. Senior night is always a bittersweet feeling and hopefully the boys will end this special night with a win. This upcoming week the team is headed to Riverside and the theme will be announced on the spirit section twitter, @MadtownSection, sometime during the week. You can follow that account to keep updated with themes, games, and other events. I’m hoping to keep a large crowd coming to the games because the more people that come, the louder we are, and the more support the boys feel. Remember to start dressing for the weather as it gets colder out. Also make sure everyone is picking up after themselves and keeping the stands clean. This year is already off to a great start and I’m hoping that we all keep this streak going throughout the rest of the school year.

JV Girls Volleyball Takes the Win

On Tuesday September 17th, the Madison Jv girls volleyball had a conference match up against the Brush Arcs. Brush is one of the easier teams to face out of the WRC so after talking to a couple of the girls they all believed that the match would benefit them and pull out a win on that Tuesday. The meet starts out slow. There were some messy plays here and there that happened, but the girls pulled it together with some hard hits and good serve returns against the Arc’s. Madison pulls out a win in the first set against Brush and they gear up to pull off another one to finish off the game. In the 2nd match setter, Aliyah Krimmel, had some good sets up to the front row hitters . They had good coordination and strong chemistry this game. The Madison ladies needed a win for some hope for the rest of the season.

They face up against Willoughby South rebels this Thursday the 19th. They will need to put together all they have to pull off a win against a strong offensive team like Willoughby South. As talking with some of the girls they say help and support from students and parents really motivate them to play harder and be a better team. So make sure you are there to support these girls as they continue their season to grow and work hard and hopefully win the WRC this year.

Madison v. Riverside- Sports preview:

The rivalry is back between the Jv boys Madison Blue Streaks and the Riverside Beavers, on September 17th, the boys kick off the game at 5:00 on the Riverside turf. The boys start up week after a loss to Notre Dame Lutheran Cathedral. Carter Horvath, junior and starting goalie, states that if the lads come into the game with confidence with their teammates, and bring the intensity the entire time they should seek victory in the end. Most of the young players believe that this will be a good matchup between the two teams, but not comparable to the Madison boys. Coach Swanarski has seen a lot of improvement in the young boys and is excited for the rest of the season. Carter, who is one who connects well with the team and can easily place the ball up the field, explains that although this is the first tough WRC match up for the JV boys and it should be a hard fought battle but if all is done well. The JV boys have played multiple tough teams in the previous game but nothing has stopped their hugh spirits and good moods. They always find a way to pick each other up and all have a good bond with each other. Nothing can stop the young boys from getting what they want. The Riverside game should be one to see and good luck to the boys.

CBI Field trip Day

On September 19th the CBI class took a field trip to the camp called Camp Hi in Hiram, OH. The field trip was a way of bringing together the students in the class and making them work together. I interviewed Mr. Kramer about the whole experience, he told me how wonderful the experience was and how the trip really helped the kids become unified.

At Camp Hi, they have a twenty five mile long river that the kids got to canoe down that can take from one to six hours depending on the experience of the canoer. Mr. Kramer said they spent about four hours canoeing down the river, it was tiring but the students had such a great experience. The river varies in depth, some areas were deeper than others so the students had to make sure they followed the rules or else they could tip over and it would be difficult to get back up. There were twenty two students that went on the trip including Mr. Kramer himself. Each canoe could hold two to three kids, they broke them up into nine groups and then set off on the trip.

The purpose of the trip was that they had to learn how to work with the other kids in the canoe to make the canoe go straight and go steadily down this twenty five mile river. In the previous years our assistant principal, Mr. Whaley had organized this trip but Mr. Kramer said he wanted to organize it a little different this year. He wanted this trip to show the kids how to work in a team and exercise their communication skills and how to handle a stressful situation because these kids had never been canoeing before the trip.

Mr. Kramer said that the trip went better than he ever hoped it would and all the kids had an overall great experience. After the field trip all the kids and Mr. Kramer went to our local Pizza Roto for lunch and had a great time. They shared pictures and stories about the trip and had a humbling experience together.

Congrats Alyssa Lavdis!

16 year old junior, Alyssa Lavdis has been playing softball for 7 years. All those years of hard work have paid off in a tremendous way. On September 1st, 12:07 a.m. Alyssa’s coach called her to share some big news. She was recruited to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to continue her D1 athletic and academic career.

When asked about what she was most excited for, besides playing softball for UTC, she said, “Getting to explore the campus in her free time, and meeting new friends!”.

Alyssa first got into softball, seven years ago, after seeing her sister playing which led into her love for the sport. Alyssa plays for the Ohio Hawks and Madison High School. Her position is pitcher and she is number 24. Alyssa first knew that she wanted to continue playing softball after highschool when she was about 12 years old when she first fell in love with the sport.

Ayssa says, “My most exciting moment from my softball career so far is when my travel team and I won nationals in Georgia this past summer”.

To make sure she’s always in shape and can do her best in softball she makes sure to workout and train during the off season. Alyssa also plays basketball for the school, and like softball, she is an outstanding player! When Alyssa isn’t playing softball or basketball she enjoys shopping, hanging out with her friends, and playing basketball for fun. Congratulations to Alyssa on her recruitment to The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she is going to be great there!

JV Football, Facing Our Rival

The Madison Blue Streaks football team played their rivalry, the Perry pirates this past weekend. The boys look forward to this game all season. They give it their all to try and bring the little brown jug home to Madison. This is our 70th year playing against the Perry Pirates hoping every year to bring the brown jug home. This game means a lot to the coaches, the players and the community.
Due to the horrendous weather on Friday, the game was cancelled and moved to September 16th at our home field. The boys were prepared to bring home a victory. The Madison JV football team prevailed with a 28-26 victory. Charlie Wade had two interceptions, one to win the game. Mike Colaneri led the defense in tackles. Cruze Tolsdorfe helped to keep the chains moving at running back with multiple good runs. Freshman Andrew Molnar had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
These boys are off to such a great season and we are hoping for more victories. They work hard and never let a loss affect how they will play the next week. The team is continually willing to improve their skills. They work hard for their playing time and to show the coaches that they can be accountable as a teammate and player. The JV boys are doing great! Keep up the good work boys, it shows!

Madison Blue Streaks vs. Mayfield Cougars

The Lady Blue Streaks varsity volleyball team won their last game on Saturday against Valley Forge at Madison Middle School, beating them in three consecutive games. The girls played the Mayfield cougars Wednesday at 7:00 at Madison High School. The varsity team has lost to the Mayfield girls in years past but they are looking to turn around their losing streak to them by taking a victory home on Wednesday. The girls put their best foot forward with their starting line up of senior and team captain Lauren Smith, junior Sadie Broadwater,  and sophomores Carly Conforte, Delaney McGrain,Caleigh Snopel, and Ellie Smith.

The girls are staying positive this season even after losing to some tough competitors like the Geneva Eagles and the Riverside Beavers. The team has really come together and is closer than ever before. The girls put up a good fight against the lady cougars. The girls lost the first game nineteen to twenty-five  and the second game twenty-three to twenty-five they came back and won the third game with Lauren Smith scoring the winning point with an amazing spike that none of the Mayfield girls could defend against. The girls couldn’t keep a win streak and they lost the fourth game giving Mayfield the three out of five games they needed to win and take home a victory against the Madison Blue Streaks. Their next game is Thursday at home against Brush and they hope to see you there.

A Beautiful Day For a Run

On Saturday September 14th, 2019 the Madison Boys Cross Country team ran at Forest Hills Park in Cleveland,  hosted by Villa Angela St. Joseph. The race started off with sophomore Dimitri Dragas,  who took the lead of the boys for the first mile. Around a mile and a half in, there was a huge hill, so described as “taller than the Madison High School building”, that came into play as the boys were running.

While descending the hill, senior Brandon Rockwood then took the lead of the boys for quite a bit of the race. As they neared the finish line, junior, Dillon Miller took the lead and finished first, with a time of 18 minutes and 21 seconds, which was 1 minute and 36 seconds better than last year. Rockwood explained how he felt good going into the race because he was prepared for the hill and the miles after it. However, he says he cannot speak for how the team felt because a good handful of them were running the course for the first time.

The biggest downfall for the team at this meet was the hill because it’s described as “the worst hill of the year,” and the boy’s legs usually get sore for the rest of the course once they run up it. Most of the boys feel pretty good about their next meet this coming Saturday September 21st,  at the Cuyahoga Community College Western Campus. It’s a flat course and this next meet rarely changes elevation throughout the entire course. The boys are excited and well prepared to see how they do as a team this coming Saturday because of all the hard work they have put in during practice.

Geneva Week

Week one of the start of the football season was very eventful for the cheerleaders. The football boys did not bring a win home with a heartbreaking loss of 22-19. Although the girls really managed to keep the school spirit rolling as the nail-biting game continued.
Junior Caitlin Barnicoat went on to say “We really enjoyed ourselves no matter the outcome of the game. My friendships with these girls help me to have fun even when we’re losing or even when it’s a very stressful fourth quarter”
The boys started off strong but ultimately lost in the final seven seconds of the game. The girls stated that they really amped up their sideline chants and cheers in that final quarter. Constantly encouraging the football team to not give up.
Throughout the game they also did many crowd involvement cheers with the student section to help them boost the boys spirits and give them that “I can do this” energy.
Senior, Caelyn Pritschau, stated “We also do things outside of the game itself like decorating the locker room, doing walk throughs with the band, or pep assemblies, to try to keep the guys in high spirits. And to encourage them to shake off this tough loss so we can be more prepared to go into next weeks game.”
The cheerleaders hope to beat Perry this week and finally bring home that little brown jug.

Madison’s key club

Madison high school is filled with lots of cool and exciting clubs, like Key club! Key Club is a student-led organization that volunteers to help out the community and organize events in and outside the school. There are different roles in key club each student can fulfill like being the President, Vice President, and secretary of treasury. Key club is a great club to get involved with and looks great on college applications. The students in charge of key club this year are President Jordan Welton, Vice President Sidney Winner, and the secretary of treasury Mikayla Alcantar.
President Jordan Welton says,”Being president has been a great opportunity so far. I’ve had a great time so far with Kilpatrick and my vice pres Sidney winner and secretary of treasury Mikayla Alcantar. We’ve got big goals for this school year!”
There are many ways to help out with key club. Coming up soon key club is hosting the Fall blood drive with the Red Cross, and hopes everyone comes out to give blood and support the Red Cross! It’s a great way to help give back to the school and community and to meet new people! People can sign up for key club anytime throughout the year by going outside room 103 and looking at the board that has all the applications and list all the meetings.

Kicking Off the Season

So far for the Madison boys soccer team are three and one, being undefeated in their conference. The lads fought hard for a victory over Brush high school with an ending scoreline of four to two with goals by Fabian  Ruiz Diaz(2), Gage Vannoy(1), and CJ Kessler(1). Currently the boys are tied for first in the WRC with Mayfeild.
Coming up the boys will be hosting Cleveland Heights for an intense match up that will be very hard fought by both sides. Last year Madison narrowly beat Cleveland heights with a scoreline of 1-0. This will be a very important game for the lads as they look to boost their record, and increase their rank to be higher up in the crop.
When talking to Justus Albert he says the key to beating Cleveland Heights is, “ We need to display teamwork, communication, and show our chemistry out on the pitch.” Later this week the lads will have another home game and host Wickliffe highvschool, looking to put another team to rest and improve their record to 5-1. They already have had a really great start to their season and are hoping to continue with the excellent play they have displayed. If the boys team can keep up the momentum and confidence they have gained by winning both WRC conference games, they are looking at a very bright and glorious season.

JV Girl’s Soccer: Sports Preview

The junior varsity girl’s soccer team, led by coach Mackenzie Spangler and assistant coach Sydney Luyando, have their first conference game against the Chardon lady hilltoppers this Tuesday at home. Over the off-season, they have been training almost every day, preparing for this season, especially for conferences matches.
Their record so far is 0-3-1 and they plan taking home another win against the opponents this Tuesday. Last year, our junior varsity team beat Chardon’s Jv team, however, this year‘s Jv team has almost no chemistry together and much is unknown about them as a unit. The key to victory this game is to gauge the new team’s strengths and use them to our advantage, and having confidence as a team overall. Building chemistry is also an essential part to win against this team. Defensive captain Allyssa Cardile, and offensive captain Melanie Rhibar believe that they will pull through with a win against Chardon, giving them a record of 0-3-2 and making them undefeated in the conference as well.
Allyssa believes that this is the first of many wins for their team and their bond/chemistry as a team is already growing. Since their recent losses this season, the team has learned a lot and is ready to get back out on the field and show what they have learned from these games and what they have to offer. This team has put in a lot of hard work and effort and they show a lot of potential. Their future looks very bright ahead.

Sports rewrite: Jv boys soccer

The junior varsity boys soccer team kicked off their first conference match on August 27th with a win over Chardon. Currently the young boys hold a record of 2 wins and 1 loss after the Chardon game. While talking to Armaan Chima, one of the three captains on the team he explains that before the game he knew it was going to be a good game and that his team would be able to hold the Hilltoppers off but he had some nerves about the rain and wet turf. With little to no practice on turf fields, the boys didn’t let a little rain stop them, they kept possession most of the game and easily worked the ball up the field to bring in 5 goals. Although with some bad luck on the defensive end with letting in 2 goals, that didn’t stop them from pushing forward and continuing to win the game. The goal scorers were captain and sophomore Chad Lewis with two and three others came from Steven Scott, Gavin Svagerko, and Aiden Hampton. Talking with the three captains they all agreed that the entire team had a great performance overall by leaving everything they had on the field to bring home the win.

With high morale the boys are ready to practice hard and prepare for the next game with another conference team. Both captains Armaan and Chad believe that this game gave the young boys more motivation going into their upcoming games in the future, this win brought the boys up with high spirits and ready to dominate the field once again against Brush High School at home on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Meet Your 2019-20 Yearbook Editors!

Capturing a whole year's worth of memories is no easy undertaking.  There are few who are willing to lead that charge.  Luckily, the yearbook is in safe hands with the recent appointment of Jill Jeschenig (Sr.) and Alyssa Knezevich (Jr.) as editors of the 91st volume of The Cauldron.
Jill is already largely known for being the new head of the MHS Student Section.  Her organization and school spirit have driven many new themes and ideas to get the stands rocking for many of our sporting events.  Her positive attitude is constantly on display when in the thick of every Blue Streak memory.  Who else could we trust to get an accurate look at all the things that will make this year one to remember?
You may also recognize Alyssa from Cheerleading in the past and a member of the student council.  Where we have been more familiar with her, however, is behind the lens of a camera.  She has an amazing eye for capturing interesting photos that tell a story worth hearing.  You will continue to notice her touch on all of these articles as she has also signed up to take over the blog!
We cannot wait to see the finished product that these talented editors construct! Stay tuned for this year's theme and cover to come in October!

Blue Streaks Starting Their Season Off Right

The Madison Jv football team played their first game of the season on Saturday, August 31st. The game took place against the Geneva Eagles at Spire Institute in Geneva. The JV team came out strong Saturday morning in an attempt to turn things around after Friday night’s Varsity loss. Giving it their all, the team secured a win.
They have worked hard all summer in preparing for this season. Their hard work and effort has started to show. JV quarterback Michael O’brien would lead the young offensive line on a series of hard fought drives. Randy Taulbee would command the defense at middle linebacker as well as keeping the chains moving at running back on the other side of the ball.
Later in the game Will Eaton helped lead the offensive and defensive line to a great game with a forced fumble on defense, and amazing blocks on offense. Truman Myers had an amazing game on the offensive side of the ball with multiple good runs and receptions.  Even with a close score, the boys kept their minds determined to achieve a victory. With a final score of 16-14 they snatched a win. The team and fans were thrilled to be a part of the team’s first victory of the season.
Everyone is looking forward with excitement to see how the boys take on the rest of the season. Fans will surely be cheering them on from the stands. The boys of Madison football are not just a team, they are more like a family. They are always willing to help each other out when one of them is in need. Next year most of these boys hope to be playing Friday night under the lights. They are a team of hard workers with strong character. Here’s to rooting them on for second with this coming Saturday against Lakeside!

A Historical Season

The Madison boy's soccer team, coached by Julio Gutierrez, has had a good start to their 2019 season. The team is lead by captains C.J Kessler, Justus Albert, and David Swinarski. This year there are twelve seniors all that have been striving for years to make their last season the best in program history. The seniors include C.J Kessler, Justus Albert, Anthony Naso, Brian Keyser, Isaac Moyer, John Wetzel, Gurkarn Chima, Nate Gortz, Brandon Hass, Cameron May, Gage Vannoy, and Fabian Ruiz-Diaz.
During the off season the team began performance training at the Spire institute, waking up early to fine tune and improve their strength and agility. The lads have gotten off to a good start to their season going 2-1, just narrowly falling to Orange Highschool. The lads opened up their season beating Geneva and Chardon in their first WRC match.
Next week the boys team will have three home games against Brush, Cleveland Heights, and Wickliffe. This group of young men do not just treat each other like teammates but as family members, and this is what allows them to communicate so well on the pitch. Everyday the team shows up to practice ready to work and fix what they need improvement on. When talking with coach Julio he says that he believes that this team has the potential to be one of the best teams in the history of the soccer program at MHS. With so many seniors leaving the season is looking up to be one of the most dramatic and action packed seasons.

JV Boys Soccer: Captain Chad Lewis

Captain of the boys JV soccer team, sophomore, Chad Lewis seemed to stick out being a starter of the team and one of the main goal scorers. Chad explains that “For the team I see us accomplishing a lot in the future and more improvement shows each practice. The team seems to be getting stronger and connecting better with each other on and off the field.” New to his position Chad says that he came into the new striker position this year and was nervous to see how it turned out, but after one or two runs in the game he became more confident with the placement on the field.

Outside of school Chad focuses mainly on soccer, his favorite team is the men’s Barcelona soccer team and plays for a Croatia team during the summer and winter. Chad holds A’s in all of his classes and hopes to graduate with honors in the future. He tries his best to get himself into the advanced classes every year and hopes to begin doing the engineering classes held here at Madison. Auburn and CCP had never crossed his mind and he does not plan on doing that when he eligible. His favorite classes are math, science, and any gym class. After high school Chad has not thought about any colleges or majors, he just knows that he wants to go into something that deals with math because that is his strong class. He can see himself doing something that involves engineering as his future job but Chad is still unsure. His most memorable moment in highschool so far is any soccer moment and starting a new position and enjoys it.

The Beginning Of The End

As the beginning of Friday night lights comes about, the 6 seniors of this years cheer leading squad start to reminisce. For these ladies cheer has always been a big part of their lives. And they are in disbelief that it’s their bittersweet, final season. This week we take on the Geneva Eagles. They have high hopes for this years football season. And have confidence in our teams ability to succeed.

Pictured here is the cheerleaders decorating the boy's locker room the day before the game. They do this to show their support and school spirit as they go into tomorrow nights game.

While talking to the seniors, they continued to tell me about how much this sport means to them. They stated it’s helped them to make some of the closest friends they will ever have in high school. And to really express their school spirit in a way others can’t. Senior, Tiffany Hammond stated to me, “ It is all coming so fast and ending too soon, but I know this season will be the best yet for not only our football team, but our competition and cheer squad as well”.

During football season, cheer competition season is underway too. Last year they brought in many wins and multiple trophies. They are all optimistic that even more trophies and awards will be coming their way.

The ladies are very excited to get this season underway and will do as much as they can to make sure the football team is feeling confident and full of school spirit!

Running XC with Brandon Rockwood

Brandon Rockwood is a senior cross country runner at Madison High School. He started to run cross country his junior year which now makes him a two year member of the sport. Brandon has his varsity letters in track as well as cross country and he runs all year round. His best time for running was at the Berkshire Early Bird Invite this year and he ran a time of 16 minutes and 56 seconds. Brandon has accomplished to place 1st at time trials, 4th at War on the Shore, 3rd at the Berkshire Early Bird Invite, and 1st again at their most recent meet at Kenston. His favorite memory from the previous season was definitely making new friends on the team since it was his first year running cross country. He also enjoys the runs on summer break with his teammates and describes them as his favorite. He explains how the team was really fun and how all the teammates had a really good sense of humor. Brandon currently has a 4.0 weighted GPA and he hopes that it will not change as he describes himself as a procrastinator and since this is his last year in high school and his last year on the track and cross country team he hopes to make the best of it. It’s one of Brandon’s dreams to go to college and run for a college team. Although before he makes the decision of running for a college team he would like to drop his best time quite a bit so he is working his hardest to get there now. In Brandon’s free time he enjoys things like biking, walking, and hanging out with friends.

Upcoming Madison Band Events

The Madison High school band had an amazing performance at the first home football game on Friday August 30th. They definitely put on a show and impressed the large, engaging crowd we had. Although Madison did not win, the atmosphere was still full of spirit as is should be considering all the hard work each player and band member put in.

I interviewed Suzy Lausin, a junior in the Madison marching band, to preview the events they have coming in the future. Suzy is one of the new drum majors, which she enjoys very much and says it’s a lot of fun. She informed me that there is band bash on September 14th at Solon, Ohio. Bands from all over come here and perform making it a very fun band show giving you different experiences on other school bands. It gives you a chance to see how other schools perform and the type of things they do differently than what we would do.

On Monday September 21st, Madison’s marching band will be performing at the Grape Jamboree. It would be great if Madison students came to support the band in the parade and showed some spirit! The Grape Jamboree is a great place to celebrate the dedication our members put in, and there is a lot more to do and see. On Friday September 25th there is a LCMEA band show, which basically is a show in Lake County where all band members in Lake County perform. We wish the best of luck to the band members in their upcoming events.

Ready to Go

This past Friday the varsity football team had a hard loss against Geneva after the Eagles scored a touchdown with 0:03 seconds left in the game. Though this was a tough way to start the season, the fans stayed strong and supported the boys the entire time. Everyone tried to keep great energy and cheer on the boys, regardless of the score. We were all so proud of our guys for staying strong and playing hard against the Eagles.

Special shoutout to everyone that came to the tailgate and Mr. Whaley for bringing in pizzas from Pizza Roto before the game. We had a lot of fun and it was a great way to get hyped up. In the future, let’s make sure that everyone is picking up after themselves and leaving the bleachers clean after the games, whether the game is home or away. We want to be known as a respectful student body. It’s a new week now and I hope everyone is getting ready to head out to Lakeside High School as our boys take on the Dragons this Friday night. The game starts at 7 and our theme is neon. Break out your brightest colors and come out to support. We’re also gearing up for Perry week in two weeks, there will probably be shirts for sale coming up but more news on that will come soon. Let’s get a big spirit section as we head over to Lakeside and hopefully let’s watch the boys get their first win of the season!

The First Pep Assembly

Our first pep assembly of the year was a memorable one. It gave off good energy for our first football game and made everyone have some school spirit for the upcoming event. The sports got to talk about how their seasons are going and the goals they have accomplished so far this year. And I can’t forget about how Mr. Fisher and the girls golf team got the whole school to sing happy birthday to me for my sweet 17,I appreciated it so much.

The fall sports teams had some good words to say about their seasons so far such as the boys and girls golf team, both Ethan kuehn and Julia bowers talked about how their season has been off to a great start and how the teams keep improving everyday. Sidney Chafee and Brandon Rockwood talked for cross country, and said their team is doing very well and some athletes have broken personal records and have achieved personal goals. All About Student Council

Welcome back to a brand new school year! This school year is going to be filled with awesome school events all arranged by Madison’s very own Student Council! For those who don’t know exactly what student council is and what they do may not really understand the importance of it. Student Council is an organization run by students but overlooked by adults, they organize school activities and events. They are the voice of the student body and help improve school spirit among the school and the student body. There are three main roles in student council, the President, Vice President, and the Treasurer, and then under those roles its student body representatives that just want to be apart of it and help.

Vice president of the junior class Corin Cody talks about some of the fun things she wants to plan for this school year, “Some things we have planned for this year would include more spirit weeks, trying to plan more fun activities at lunch during holidays, we want the students to get more involved with the school and their community, I would like to see the spirit buses for away sporting events start up and running again, personally I would like to bring up the idea of painting senior parking spaces, and bringing back senior quotes.

Corin and her fellow student council members play a huge role in our school activities and events, and do a great job! Though Corin is taking classes at Auburn she’s making sure to stay on top of her student council work as the vice president! Since the school year has only just started they haven’t been able to have a meeting yet, but they will be having one soon. One of the next things on their agenda is organizing Spirit week. Spirit week is an amazing week to participate in school activities and show your school spirit! So make sure to stay on the lookout for any news regarding spirit week, and anyways you can help student council achieve their goals and more for the 2019-2020 school year!

Any Time is Tee Time

The ladies are off to a good start putting up some good scores in the first couple weeks of the season. The girls golf team faced the South Rebels in a match this past Wednesday. With girls coming in with some pretty good scores the lady streaks defeated the rebels.

Overall the team is very excited about what is to come this season. The girls are improving everyday and are looking into a positive future. With the girls being one of the only teams in the league showing improvement they have a pretty good shot of coming in with the victory at the post season tournament held at their home course Erie Shores every year. The girls also had a match yesterday Thursday the 29th against the Chardon Hilltoppers. The girls played the course a little rough and had some good and bad shots. The Hilltoppers had a rough time yesterday too but overall came through with the tight win against the Blue streaks.

The girls have a busier week next week hosting the Geneva Eagles on Wednesday along with a tri match against the South Rebels and Conneaut. The girls are looking forward to this week and are going to keep pushing hard to accomplish the goals they have for this season. “I’m really looking forward to what is ahead of us. I see good things happening for this team in the future and I'm blessed to be apart of it one last time” says senior and varsity captain Alyssa Molnar.

Jv Volleyball Team Faces Riverside

The Jv volleyball ladies had a conference rivalry game this Thursday, August 28th, at Riverside High school. There they faced the well prepared team at 5 pm. They were hoping for a win with great efforts, but couldn’t pull it off. Their record for the season so far is 1-2. I managed to talk to one of the players on the team before the match. Junior,  Giana Masony. She was excited for the game but nervous knowing Riverside has a reputation for being good in volleyball. She talked about how they need better communication to be able to win a match and to be more of a team and understand each other. However, Riverside just had too good of hitters in the front row and could handle the ball really well . Then I talked to, sophomore, Aliyah Krimmel, she said they were hoping for a win but ended up with a tough loss. She said they will learn from the experience and get those girls next time.
As they head on into the rest of their season they are hoping for good results after this tough loss. Right hitter, Giana , said she can’t wait to be a leader for the girls this year and is excited for more to come. There is a Jv volleyball game tomorrow August 31st. They face a hard match against Valleyforge and they will need all the help and support from the community that they can get. Come out and support the Jv girls as they take on the rest of the WRC teams.

Beat Those Beavers

Madison’s ladies varsity volleyball team is starting their season off with a record of 1-2 and they are hoping to change that record to 2-2 with a win this coming Thursday. On the 29th the volleyball team and Coach Smith are travelling to Riverside High School to face their rivals of the Riverside Beaver’s volleyball team who is a big conference rival. This is their fourth game of the season and it is expected to be a really good game between the two schools. The Riverside girls are always ready to win. The girls have lost to Riverside’s team in the past years in some close games. It is expected to be a real nail biter this year between the two teams. Even with a few girls out due to some injuries the team has the confidence that they can go to the end and come out on top this year. One of the 3 varsity team captain Jordan Yates says “The girls have really come together this year and have gotten better at communicating during the games, which should help us win our game on Thursday. Staying positive and never getting to hard on yourself will really help everyone on the team this year." The girls also want to thank all their family and friends who have come out to support them at their previous games and want to see them at ones to come. The girls can all agree that seeing their fans in the crowd gives them the motivation they need to play their hardest.

Madison band 2019-2020

Are we ready for another exciting season of football, student sections, and lastly dancing and cheering to the music the band performs for us? This year we have a total of 80 new band members to kick off this school year. I think we should all appreciate the time and effort each band member puts in to give us a good show at the football games and anywhere else they perform. From becoming more disciplined to understanding the complexities of working as a team you learn valuable life lessons such as, multi-tasking, personal growth, endurance, leadership, responsibility, presentation, and many more.
I interviewed Maria Stocker, a junior in marching band, to get an inside look for this upcoming year. First, Maria talks about how she really enjoys band and it is a lot of fun because of all the people she met and the friends that she has made. On Wednesday August 28, Maria and all the other band members had a drumline battle at the captains game in Eastlake, Ohio. A drumline battle is when all the drumlines from each band that is at the game compete to be the best. Once they have performed and did the best they could with giving a great amount of effort the people vote for who they think succeeded the most. The members were proud of themselves and did very good at their first drumline of the year. This year is filled with exciting new things that they can’t wait to share with everyone else!

New Season with Quarterback Michael O’Brien

Michael O’Brien is a well-known student at Madison High School. He is this year’s quarterback of the JV football team. Michael is respectful to his peers and teammates. He has a big heart and is always willing to lend a helping hand. The Madison football coaches are proud of Michael and the positive energy he brings to the team. As Coach Cramer states, “Michael always has an upbeat attitude.
While the freshmen team had its struggles last year, Michael never stopped working hard during the off season to make sure that this year is a great one.” His determination and strong work ethic are sure to lead the team to many victories this season. Michael feels honored to be on the team and part of the 212 community. He hopes to become a football captain his senior year.
In addition to working hard on the field, Michael has earned a 4.0 gpa and plans to graduate at the top of his class. He is a member of the Madison boy’s basketball team and hopes to earn his varsity letter in football and basketball. Michael’s favorite class is weight training with Mr. Willis and his favorite hobby is playing football. He looks up to his older brother and is proud of him because he played football during high school and in college.

His favorite movie is The Waterboy. When asked to share his most memorable moment, Michael would have to say it was last year during the last varsity football game against Brush High School, “It was such an unbelievable feeling when the crowd started storming the field for the team’s victory.” Keep up the great work Michael!
